천국과 지옥 사이 균형에 의해 사람은 자유 안에 있다

끝으로 천국에서 사람 안으로 흘러드는 입류의 영향으로 사람이 사후 생활에 대해 갖게 되는 직감에 대해 말할 것이 있다. 세상에서 신앙에서 나온 선함으로 산 단순한 사람들이 있었다. 이들은 세상에서의 상태와 똑같은 상태로 되돌려지고 나서, 주께서 허락하시면 누구나 이런 상태가 될 수 있다, 그들이 사람의 사후 상태에 대해서 어떤 관념을 갖고 있었는지를 보여 주게 되었다. 그들은 이렇게 말했다. ‘세상에 살 때, 어떤 지식인들이 우리에게 지상의 삶이 끝난 뒤 영혼이 어떻게 되는지 아느냐고 물었다. 우리는 영혼이 무엇인지 모른다고 대답했다. 그러자 그들은 우리가 죽으면 어떤 상태가 될 거라 믿느냐고 물었다. 우리는 영으로 살 거라 믿는다고 말했다. 그들은 다시 영이 무엇이라고 믿느냐고 물었다. 우리는 영은 사람이라고 대답했다. 그들은 그것을 어떻게 아느냐고 물었다. 우리는 사실이 그러니까 그렇게 알고 있다고 말했다. 그 지식인들은 우리같이 단순한 사람들이 자기들도 갖지 못한 그런 신앙을 갖고 있다는 것을 놀라워했다.’ 나에게 이것은 천국과 결합된 모든 사람에게는 사후 생활에 대한 어떤 직감이 있다는 하나의 증거가 되었다. 이런 직감의 원천은 오직 천국에서 오는 입류, 즉 주님에게서 비롯되어 천국을 거쳐서 사람과 결합해 있는 중간 영계 영들에 의해서 사람에게 들어오는 입류 외에는 없다. 이 직감은 여러 가지 논리로 사람의 영혼, 곧 사람의 영혼은 순전한 생각이라거나 몸 안에 정착하는 어떤 활동 원리라고 하는 선입견적 관념을 획득하고 고착시킴으로써, 자신의 생각하는 자유를 없애버린 사람에게는 있을 수 없다. 그러나 영혼은 바로 사람의 생명이며, 영은 사람 자체인 것이다. 사람이 이 세상에서 지니는 물질적인 몸은 그 사람 자체인 영이 자연계에서 활동하기 적합하게 만들어진 대행체에 불과한 것이다. Finally something must be said respecting man’s intuition in regard to his life after death which is derived from the influx of heaven into man. There were some of the simple common people who had lived in the world in the good of faith who were brought back into a state like that in which they had been in the world, which can be done with anyone when the Lord grants it; and it was then shown what opinion they had held about the state of man after death. They said that some intelligent persons had asked them in the world what they thought about their soul after the life on earth; and they replied that they did not know what the soul is. They were then asked what they believed about their state after death; and they said that they believed that they would live as spirits. Again they were asked what belief they had respecting a spirit; and they said that he is a man. They were asked how they knew this; and they said that they knew it because it is so. Those intelligent men were surprised that the simple had such a faith, which they themselves did not have. This is a proof that in every man who is in conjunction with heaven there is an intuition respecting his life after death. This intuition is from no other source than an influx out of heaven, that is, through heaven from the Lord by means of spirits from the world of spirits who are joined with man. This intuition those have who have not extinguished their freedom of thinking by notions previously adopted and confirmed by various arguments respecting the soul of man, which is held to be either pure thought, or some vital principle the seat of which is sought for in the body; and yet the soul is nothing but the life of man, while the spirit is the man himself; and the earthly body which he carries about with him in the world is merely an agent whereby the spirit, which is the man himself, is enabled to act fitly in the natural world.
