천국과 지옥 사이 균형에 의해 사람은 자유 안에 있다

사람이 고쳐질 수 있도록 자유 안에 있게 하기 위해서 사람의 영은 천국과 지옥 양쪽과 결합되어 있다. 모든 사람에게는 지옥에서 온 영들과 천국에서 온 천사들이 함께 있는 것이다. 사람은 지옥으로 인해 자기 자신의 악 안에 있고, 반면 천국의 천사들에 의해 사람은 주님으로부터 오는 선 안에 있다. 그렇게 해서 사람은 영적 균형, 즉 자유 안에 있다. 천국의 천사들과 지옥 영들이 각 사람에게 와 있다는 것은 천국과 인류와의 결합을 다룬 장에 나와 있다 (291–302항). In order that man may be in freedom, to the end that he may be reformed, he is conjoined in respect to his spirit both with heaven and with hell. For with every man there are spirits from hell and angels from heaven. It is by means of hell that man is in his own evil, while it is by means of angels from heaven that man is in good from the Lord; thus is he in spiritual equilibrium, that is, in freedom. That angels from heaven and spirits from hell are joined to every man may be seen in the chapter on the conjunction of heaven with the human race (n. 291–302).
