천국과 지옥 사이의 균형

천국은 천적 나라, 영적 나라하고 하는 두 나라로 구분되어 있다 (20–28항). 마찬가지로 지옥도 두 나라로 구분되어 있다. 하나는 천적 나라에 반대되고, 하나는 영적 나라에 반대된다. 천적 나라에 반대되는 지옥은 서쪽 방위에 있고, 그 안의 영들은 악마라고 불린다. 영적 나라에 반대되는 지옥은 북쪽과 남쪽 방위에 있고, 그 안의 영들은 악령이라고 불린다. 천적 나라에 있는 모두는 주님을 향한 사랑 속에 살며, 그 나라에 반대되는 지옥의 모두는 자기 사랑 속에 산다. 영적 나라에 있는 모두는 이웃 사랑 속에 살고, 그 나라에 반대되는 지옥의 모두는 세상 사랑 속에 산다. 여기서 분명해지는 것은, 주님 사랑과 자기 사랑은 서로 정반대가 되고, 마찬가지로 이웃 사랑과 세상 사랑도 서로 정반대가 된다는 사실이다 주님은 천적 나라에 반대되는 지옥으로부터 어떤 것도 영적 나라에 있는 사람들에게 넘어 들어가지 못하도록 끊임없이 섭리하신다. 만일 그렇게 되면 영적 나라는 파괴될 것이기 때문이다. 그 이유는 앞의 579, 678항에서 밝혔다. 이 두 가지 일반적 균형은 주께서 항상 유지되게 하시는 것이다. There are two kingdoms into which the heavens are divided, the celestial kingdom and the spiritual kingdom (of which see above, n. 20–28). In like manner the hells are divided into two kingdoms, one of which is opposite to the celestial kingdom and the other opposite to the spiritual kingdom. That which is opposite to the celestial kingdom is in the western quarter, and those who are in it are called genii; and that which is opposite to the spiritual kingdom is in the northern and southern quarters, and those which are in it are called spirits. All who are in the celestial kingdom are in love to the Lord, and all who are in the hells opposite to that kingdom are in the love of self; while all who are in the spiritual kingdom are in love toward the neighbor, and all who are in the hells opposite to that kingdom are in love of the world. Evidently, then, love to the Lord and the love of self are opposites; and in like manner love toward the neighbor and love of the world are opposites. The Lord continually provides that there shall be no outflowing from the hells that are opposite the Lord’s celestial kingdom toward those who are in the spiritual kingdom; for if this were done the spiritual kingdom would perish (for the reason given above, n. 579, 678). These are the two general equilibriums that are unceasingly maintained by the Lord.
