천국과 지옥 사이의 균형

천국과 지옥 안의 모든 것은 각 개인이 개별적 균형 안에 있을 수 있도록 조정되어 있다. 이것은 지금까지 천국과 지옥에 대해 설명한 내용들로 어느 정도 유추할 수 있을 것이다. 즉 천국의 모든 공동체는 그들 선의 종류와 질에 따라 정확히 구분되어 있고, 지옥의 모든 공동체는 그들 악의 종류와 질에 따라 구분되어 있다. 또 천국의 모든 공동체 밑에는 그에 반대되게 상응하는 지옥 공동체가 있으며, 이 반대되는 상응이 균형을 만든다. 따라서 주님은 어느 천국 공동체 밑에 있는 지옥 공동체든지 세력이 우세해지지 않도록 끊임없이 섭리하신다. 어떤 지옥 공동체가 우세해지기 시작하면 즉시 여러 가지 방법으로 제지하여 다시 정확한 균형 관계로 돌리신다. 그 방법들 중 아주 일부만 언급하겠다. 주께서 더 강하게 임하시는 것과 관련된 방법도 있고, 하나나 그 이상의 공동체를 다른 공동체들과 더 밀접한 교통과 결합으로 묶는 방법도 있다. 넘치는 지옥 영들을 사막으로 쫓아내는 방법, 한 지옥에서 다른 지옥으로 영들을 옮기는 방법, 지옥 안의 영들을 재정리하는 방법도 있다. 이것도 또 다양한 방식으로 이루어진다. 그중 일부는 지옥을 더 두껍고 무거운 덮개로 봉쇄하는 것과 관련되고, 또 일부는 지옥을 더 깊이 내려보내는 것에 관련된다. 이밖에도 그 지옥 위에 있는 천국을 통해서 이루어지는 많은 방법이 있다. 이것을 언급한 이유는 오직 주님께서만 어디에나 선과 악 사이의 균형이 있게 하시고, 따라서 천국과 지옥 사이의 균형을 이루신다는 것을 숙지할 수 있도록 하기 위해서다. How all things are so arranged in the heavens and in the hells that each and all of those who are there may be in their equilibrium, can in some measure be seen from what has been said and shown above respecting the heavens and the hells, namely, that all the societies of heaven are distinctly arranged in accordance with goods and their kinds and varieties, and all the societies of hell in accordance with evils, and their kinds and varieties; and that beneath each society of heaven there is a society of hell corresponding to it from opposition, and from this opposing correspondence equilibrium results; and in consequence of this the Lord unceasingly provides that no infernal society beneath a heavenly society shall gain any preponderance, and as soon as it begins to do so it is restrained by various means, and is reduced to an exact measure of equilibrium. These means are many, only a few of which I will mention. Some of these means have reference to the stronger presence of the Lord; some to the closer communication and conjunction of one or more societies with others; some to the casting out of superabundant infernal spirits into deserts; some to the transference of certain spirits from one hell to another; some to the reducing of those in the hells to order, and this also is effected in various ways; some to the screening of certain hells under denser and thicker coverings, also letting them down to greater depths; besides other means; and still others that are employed in the heavens above the hells. All this has been said that it may in some measure be perceived that the Lord alone provides that there shall be an equilibrium everywhere between good and evil, thus between heaven and hell; for on such equilibrium the safety of all in the heavens and of all on the earth rests.
