천국과 지옥 사이의 균형

The Equilibrium between Heaven and Hell

주께서 천국과 지옥을 다 다스리지 않으시면 균형이 이루어질 수 없다. 균형이 없다면 천국도 지옥도 없을 것이다. 왜냐하면, 우주 전체의 모든 것, 다시 말하면, 자연계와 영계에 있는 모든 것은 균형에 의해 지탱되기 때문이다. 합리적인 사람은 누구나 이것이 옳다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다. 만일 한쪽이 무게를 가하는데 상대편에서 전혀 저항하지 않는다면, 양쪽 다 파괴되지 않겠는가? 영계에서도 마찬가지다. 만일 선이 악에 반작용을 가하며, 끊임없이 그 폭동을 제압하지 않는다면, 그리고 이것이 신성 자체에 의해 이루어지지 않으면, 천국과 지옥은 둘 다 멸망할 것이고, 그에 따라 전 인류도 멸망할 것이다. 신성 자체에 의해 이루어져야 한다고 말한 이유는, 천사, 영, 사람을 막론하고, 모든 사람의 본성은 악 외에 아무 것도 아니기 때문이다 (591항). 따라서 천사도 영도 그 본성은 지옥적 성향을 가지고 있기 때문에, 지옥에서 쉬지 않고 내뿜는 악에 일말의 저항도 할 수 없는 것이다. 그러므로 오직 주께서 천국과 지옥을 다스리지 않으시면, 아무도 구원받지 못한다는 것이 자명해진다. 게다가 모든 지옥은 하나로 움직인다. 지옥에 있는 모든 악은 천국의 모든 선처럼 서로 연결되어 있기 때문이다 그러므로 오직 신성만이, 그 수없이 많은 지옥이 일치하여 천국과 천국에 있는 모든 사람을 공격하는 것을 전부 막으실 수 있다. 그 신성은 오직 주님으로부터만 나온다. Unless the Lord ruled both the heavens and the hells there would be no equilibrium; and if there were no equilibrium there would be no heaven or hell; for all things and each thing in the universe, that is, both in the natural world and in the spiritual world, endure by means of equilibrium. Every rational man can see that this is true. If there were a preponderance on one part and no resistance on the other would not both perish? So would it be in the spiritual world if good did not react against evil and continually restrain its uprising; and unless this were done by the Divine itself both heaven and hell would perish, and with them the whole human race. It is said unless the Divine itself did this, because the self of everyone, whether angel, spirit, or man, is nothing but evil (see above, n. 591); consequently neither angels nor spirits are able in the least to resist the evils continually exhaling from the hells, since from self they all tend toward hell. It is evident, then, that unless the Lord alone ruled both the heavens and the hells no one could ever be saved. Moreover, all the hells act as one; for evils in the hells are connected as goods are in the heavens; and the Divine alone, which goes forth solely from the Lord, is able to resist all the hells, which are innumerable, and which act together against heaven and against all who are in heaven.
