천국과 지옥 사이의 균형

우리가 알아야 할 것은, 지옥들은 끊임없이 천국을 공격하고, 파괴하려 애쓰며, 주님은 끊임없이 천국을 보호하신다는 사실이다. 천국을 보호하시는 방법은, 천국 안에 있는 사람들이 자기 본성의 악에 빠져들지 않도록 막으시고, 또 주님으로부터 나오는 선 안에 그들을 붙들어 두시는 것이다. 나는 가끔 허락하심에 의해 지옥에서 방사되는 영향권을 지각할 수 있었다. 그것은 완전히 주님의 신성과 천국을 파괴하려는 기세로만 이루어진 영향권이었다. 때로 나는 어떤 지옥의 파괴적인 기세가 돌발적으로 터져 나오는 것을 느낀 적이 있다. 그러나 이와 반대로 천국은 결코 지옥을 공격하지 않는다. 주님으로부터 나오는 신성의 영향권은 모두를 구원하시려는 항구적인 노력이기 때문이다. 그럼에도 지옥에 있는 사람들은 구원될 수 없기 때문에, 가능한 한 지옥의 폭동을 진압하시고, 그들이 서로를 한계 이상으로 공격하지 못하도록 그들의 잔인함에 제재를 가하시는 것이다. 지옥에 있는 사람들이 구원될 수 없는 것은, 그들 모두가 악 안에 살고, 주님의 신성을 적대시하기 때문이다. 이것은 또한 그 안에 주님의 신적 능력이 머무르고 있는 무수한 방법으로 시행된다. It should be known that the hells are continually assaulting heaven and endeavoring to destroy it, and that the Lord continually protects the heavens by withholding those who are in it from the evils derived from their self, and by holding them in the good that is from himself. I have often been permitted to perceive the sphere that flows forth from the hells, which was wholly a sphere of effort to destroy the Divine of the Lord, and thus heaven. The ebullitions of some hells have also at times been perceived, which were efforts to break forth and to destroy. But on the other hand the heavens never assault the hells, for the Divine sphere that goes forth from the Lord is a perpetual effort to save all; and as those who are in the hells cannot be saved (since all who are there are in evil and are antagonistic to the Divine of the Lord), so as far as possible outrages in the hells are subdued and cruelties are restrained to prevent their breaking out beyond measure one against another. This also is effected by innumerable ways in which the Divine power is exercised.
