지옥들의 모습, 위치 및 수효

The Appearance, Situation, and Number of the Hells

지옥은 사방에 있다. 산과 언덕과 암벽 밑에, 평지와 계곡 밑에 어디에나 있다. 산과 언덕과 암벽 밑에 있는 지옥으로 가는 입구, 즉 문은 구멍이나 바위틈같이 보이고, 어떤 것은 넓게 벌어져 있고, 어떤 것은 가늘고 좁으며, 대부분 울퉁불퉁하다. 들여다보면 전부 어둡고 컴컴하다. 그 안에 있는 지옥적 영들은 타는 석탄에서 나오는 것 같은 불빛 속에 있다. 그들의 눈은 그 빛에 적응되어 있다. 그들이 세상에 살 때 신적 진리를 거부했기 때문에, 신적 진리에 대해서는 캄캄했고, 허위를 확신했으므로 허위에 대해서는 밝았기 때문이다. 그래서 그 영들의 시각이 그렇게 형성된 것이다. 같은 이유에서 천국의 빛은 그들에게 짙은 어둠이며, 따라서 그들이 자기 동굴 밖으로 나가면, 아무 것도 볼 수 없는 것이다. 이 모든 것으로 충분히 알 수 있는 것은, 사람은 신성을 인정한 정도만큼만 천국의 빛 안으로 들어가고, 또 그 자신 안에 천국과 교회에 속한 것을 확립할 수 있다는 사실이다. 또 사람이 신성을 부인한 정도만큼 지옥의 흑암으로 들어가며, 자신 안에 천국과 교회의 진리에 반대되는 것을 확립한다는 사실이다. The hells are everywhere, both under the mountains, hills, and rocks, and under the plains and valleys. The openings or gates to the hells that are under the mountains, hills, and rocks, appear to the sight like holes and clefts in the rocks, some extended and wide, and some straitened and narrow, and many of them rugged. They all, when looked into, appear dark and dusky; but the infernal spirits that are in them are in such a luminosity as arises from burning coals. Their eyes are adapted to the reception of that light, and for the reason that while they lived in the world they were in thick darkness in respect to Divine truths, because of their denying them, and were in a sort of light in respect to falsities because of their affirming them. In this way did the sight of their eyes become so formed. And for the same reason the light of heaven is thick darkness to them, and therefore when they go out of their dens they see nothing. All this makes it abundantly clear that man comes into the light of heaven just to the extent that he acknowledges the Divine, and establishes in himself the things of heaven and the church; and that he comes into the thick darkness of hell just to the extent that he denies the Divine, and establishes in himself what is contrary to the truths of heaven and the church.
