평지와 계곡 밑에 있는 지옥으로 가는 입구, 즉 문은 눈앞에 여러 다른 모습으로 나타난다. 어떤 것은 산과 언덕과 암벽 밑에 있는 입구와 비슷하고, 어떤 것은 토굴과 바위굴 같고, 어떤 것은 깊은 구렁이나 소용돌이 같으며, 어떤 것은 수렁이나 늪같이 보인다. 이 모든 입구는 다 덮여 있고, 중간 영계에서 영이 던져질 때만 열린다. 열릴 때마다 거기서는 마치 불타는 건물에서처럼 불이나 연기 같은 것이 뿜어 나온다. 아니면 연기 없이 화염만 나오거나 불 때는 굴뚝에서 나오는 그을음 같은 것, 또는 안개나 먹구름 같은 것이 뿜어 나온다. 내가 들은 바로는 지옥의 영들은 이런 것을 보지도 느끼지도 못한다고 한다. 그 안에 있으면 마치 자기에게 적합한 공기 속에 있는 것과 같아서 자기 생명의 즐거움을 느끼기 때문이라고 한다. 그 이유는 그런 것들이 그들이 빠져 있는 악과 허위에 상응하기 때문이다. 불은 미움과 복수심에, 연기와 그을음은 거기서 나오는 허위에, 화염은 자기 사랑의 악에, 그리고 안개나 먹구름은 그 사랑에서 나온 허위에 상응한다. The openings or gates to the hells that are beneath the plains and valleys present to the sight different appearances. Some resemble those that are beneath the mountains, hills, and rocks; some resemble dens and caverns, some great chasms and whirlpools; some resemble bogs, and some standing water. They are all covered, and are opened only when evil spirits from the world of spirits are cast in; and when they are opened there bursts forth from them either something like the fire and smoke that is seen in the air from burning buildings, or like a flame without smoke, or like soot such as comes from a burning chimney, or like a mist and thick cloud. I have heard that the infernal spirits neither see nor feel these things, because when they are in them they are as in their own atmosphere, and thus in the delight of their life; and this for the reason that these things correspond to the evils and falsities in which they are, fire corresponding to hatred and revenge, smoke and soot to the falsities therefrom, flame to the evils of the love of self, and a mist or thick cloud to falsities from that love.
