영들과 천사들이 사는 곳인 영계에 보이는 사물은 사람이 사는 자연계의 사물과 거의 비슷하다. 겉모습에 있어서는 아무 차이가 없다. 그 세계에도 산과 들, 언덕과 바위들, 그리고 그 사이의 골짜기가 있다. 그리고 물이나 그밖에 지상에 있는 많은 것이 보인다. 그러나 이 모든 것은 영적 근원에서 나온 것이고, 따라서 영들과 천사들의 눈에는 보이지만 사람의 눈에는 보이지 않는다. 사람은 자연계에 있기 때문이다. 영적 존재들은 영적 근원에서 나온 것을 보고, 자연적 존재들은 자연적 근원에서 나온 것을 보는 것이다. 그러므로 사람은 영계에 있는 사물을 결코 눈으로 볼 수 없다. 영의 상태에 드는 것이 허락되는 경우나, 아니면 죽은 후 영이 되어야만 그것을 볼 수 있는 것이다. In the spiritual world, that is, in the world where spirits and angels are, the same objects appear as in the natural world, that is, where men are. In external appearance there is no difference. In that world plains and mountains, hills and rocks, and valleys between them, are seen; also waters, and many other things that are seen on earth. And yet all these things are from a spiritual origin, and all are therefore seen by the eyes of spirits and angels, and not by the eyes of men, because men are in the natural world. Spiritual beings see such things as are from a spiritual origin, and natural beings such things as are from a natural origin. Consequently man with his eyes can in no way see the objects that are in the spiritual world unless he is permitted to be in the spirit, or after death when he becomes a spirit.

 

그 반면에, 천사나 영은 자연계에 있는 것을 하나도 볼 수 없다. 단, 그 영과 말할 수 있게 허락된 사람과 함께 있을 때는 예외다. 비록 사람과 영의 눈은 겉보기에는 완전히 똑같지만, 사람의 눈은 자연계의 빛을 받기에 적합하게 되어 있고, 천사의 눈은 영계의 빛을 받기에 적합하게 되어 있기 때문이다. On the other hand, an angel or a spirit is unable to see anything at all in the natural world unless he is with a man who is permitted to speak with him. For the eyes of man are fitted to receive the light of the natural world, and the eyes of angels and spirits are fitted to receive the light of the spiritual world; although the eyes of the two are exactly alike in appearance.

 

영계가 그렇다는 것을 자연적인 사람은 이해할 수 없다. 감각적인 사람은 더구나 이해를 못한다. 감각적인 사람은 자기 육신의 눈으로 보고, 손으로 만지는 것, 즉 시각과 촉각에 들어오는 것 외에는 아무 것도 믿지 않는 사람이다. 그의 생각은 그런 것에 바탕을 두고 있기 때문에, 영적이지 않고, 물질적이다. 영계와 자연계가 그렇게 유사하기 때문에, 사람은 죽은 뒤에 자기가 태어난 세상에 있지 않다는 것과, 거기서 떠났다는 사실을 믿지 못한다. 이런 이유로, 죽음은 단지 한 세상에서 그와 비슷한 다른 세상으로 옮겨가는 것에 불과하다고 하는 것이다. 그 두 세계가 그렇게 비슷하다는 것은, 이 책 앞부분에 천국의 표상과 외관을 다룬 곳에 나와 있다(170–176). That the spiritual world is such the natural man cannot comprehend, and least of all the sensual man, who believes nothing except what he sees with his bodily eyes and touches with his hands, and therefore takes in by sight and touch. As his thought is from such things it is material and not spiritual. Such being the likeness between the spiritual world and the natural world, man can hardly believe after death that he is not in the world where he was born, and from which he has departed. For this reason death is called simply a translation from one world into another like it.
