지옥 불이라는 건 무엇이고, 이를 간다는 건 무엇인가

지옥의 불이 자기 사랑에서 나오는 악을 행하려는 욕망을 의미하므로, 이 불은 또한 지옥에 있는 종류의 고문을 의미하기도 한다. 자기 사랑에서 나온 욕망은 자기를 받들고, 높이고, 숭배하지 않는 모든 사람을 해치고 싶어 하는 욕망이기 때문이다. 거기에는 그로 인해 일어나는 분노의 정도만큼, 그리고 그 분노에서 나오는 미움과 복수심만큼, 그들에게 포악을 부리고 싶은 욕망이 포함된다. 이런 욕망이 한 사회의 모든 사람 안에서 들끓고 있을 때, 그리고 법의 두려움이나 명성과 명예와 이득 및 목숨의 손실에 대한 두려움 같은 어떠한 외적 제약에도 구속받지 않을 때, 모든 사람은 그 자신의 악의 충동에 의해 다른 사람에게 달려들고, 자기가 우세한 한 나머지를 정복하고, 자기 지배하에 굴종시키는 것과 항복하지 않는 이들에게 포악을 부리는 것에서 즐거움을 느낄 것이다. 이 즐거움은 독재의 즐거움과 밀접하게 결합되어 있어 사람에게 그중 하나가 있는 정도만큼 다른 하나가 존재할 정도다. 왜냐하면 남을 해치는 즐거움은 위에서 말한 자기 사랑의 모든 악인 적개심, 질투, 증오, 복수심 안에 들어있기 때문이다. 모든 지옥이 바로 그런 사회다. 따라서 그곳의 모든 사람은 가슴에 남에 대한 증오가 끓고 있으며, 힘이 있는 한, 그 증오심에서 잔인함을 폭발시킨다. 이 잔인함과 거기서 나온 고문들도 지옥 불이 의미하는 것이다. 그것들이 욕망의 산물이기 때문이다. Since infernal fire means every lust for doing evil that flows forth from the love of self, this fire means also such torment as exists in the hells. For the lust from that love is a lust for injuring others who do not honor, venerate, and worship oneself; and in proportion to the anger thereby excited, and the hatred and revenge from that anger, is there a lust for venting one’s rage upon them. When such lust is active in everyone in a society, and is restrained by no external bond, such as the fear of the law, and of the loss of reputation, honor, gain, and life, everyone from the impulse of his own evil rushes upon another; and so far as he prevails subjugates the rest and subjects them to his dominion, and vents his rage with delight upon those who do not submit themselves. This delight is so intimately united with the delight of bearing rule that they exist in the same measure, since the delight of doing harm is contained in all enmity, envy, hatred, and revenge, which as said above, are the evils of that love. All the hells are such societies, and in consequence everyone there bears hatred in his heart against others, and from hatred bursts forth into cruelty so far as he has power. These cruelties and their torments are also meant by infernal fire, since they are the effects of lusts.
