What Hell Fire Is and What the Gnashing of Teeth Is

‘지옥의 불’이 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑에서 나온 악을 행하려는 욕망을 의미하고, 이전 장에서 밝힌 것처럼, 지옥에 있는 모든 사람의 욕망이 그러하므로 지옥이 열리면, 큰 화재가 났을 때와 같은 연기와 불이 거기 보인다. 자기 사랑이 우세한 지옥에서는 탁한 불이, 세상 사랑이 우세한 지옥에서는 불꽃을 내는 불이 보인다. 그러나 지옥이 닫히면, 이 불의 형상은 보이지 않고, 그 대신 연기가 응집한 것 같은 어두움이 보인다. 그래도 그 불은 여전히 안에서 이글거리고 있는 것을 거기서 뿜어나오는 열기로 알아볼 수 있다. 그것은 마치 화재 뒤의 폐허에서 나는 열기 같고, 또 다른 곳에서는 가열된 용광로에서 나는 열기 같고, 어떤 곳에서는 뜨거운 목욕탕에서 나는 열기와 같다. 이 열이 사람에게 들어가면 그의 욕망을 자극하고, 악한 사람 안에서는 미움과 복수심을, 병약자에게는 광기를 일으킨다. As the lust of doing the evils that are from the love of self and of the world is meant by “infernal fire,” and as such is the lust of all in the hells (as shown in the foregoing chapter) so when the hells are opened there is an appearance of fire with smoke, such as is seen in conflagrations, a dense fire from the hells where the love of self prevails, and a flaming fire from the hells where love of the world prevails. But when the hells are closed this fiery appearance is not seen, but in its place there is a kind of obscurity like a condensation of smoke; although the fire still rages within, as can be seen by the heat exhaling therefrom, which is like the heat from the burnt ruins after a fire, and in some places like the heat from a heated furnace, in others like the heat from a hot bath. When this heat flows into man it excites lusts in him, and in evil men hatred and revenge, and in the sick insanities.

 

이것이 위에 말한 사랑 안에 있는 사람들에게 영향을 주는 불이고, 열이다. 그들은 몸 안에 있을 때도 영이 그런 지옥에 소속되어 있기 때문이다. 그러나 우리가 알아야 할 것은, 지옥에 있는 사람들이 불 속에 있는 것은 아니라는 사실이다. 그 불은 하나의 외관이다. 그곳에 있는 사람들은 조금도 자기가 탄다는 느낌이 없고, 단지 세상에서와 같은 체온을 느낄 뿐이다. 이런 외관상의 불은 상응에 의한 것이다. 사랑은 불에 상응한다. 그리고 영계에 나타나는 모든 것은 상응에 따라서 나타나는 것이다. Such is the fire or such the heat that affects those who are in the above-mentioned loves, because in respect to their spirit they are attached to those hells, even while living in the body. But it must be understood that those who are in the hells are not in fire; the fire is an appearance; those there are conscious of no burning, but only of a warmth like that which they had felt when in the world. This appearance of fire is from correspondence, since love corresponds to fire, and all things seen in the spiritual world are seen in accordance with correspondences.
