지옥 불인 지옥의 사랑은 천국 불인 천국의 사랑과 원천이 같다. 즉 천국의 해이신 주님으로부터 나오는 것이다. 그러나 그것을 받아들이는 사람들이 지옥적으로 만든 것이다. 영계에서 나오는 모든 입류는 받아들이는 데 따라 달라지기 때문이다. 다시 말하면, 입류가 어떤 형태 안으로 흘러드느냐에 따라서 달라진다. 이것은 세상 해에서 나오는 열과 빛의 경우와 똑같다. 해에서 나오는 열이 숲과 화원에 들어가면 초목과 상쾌하고 달콤한 향기가 생긴다. 그러나 똑같은 열이 배설물과 부패 물질에 들어가면 썩음과 불쾌하고 역한 냄새가 생긴다. 마찬가지로 똑같은 해에서 나온 빛이 한 물체에 닿으면 아름답고 보기 좋은 색이 되지만, 다른 물체에 닿으면 그렇지 않은 색이 된다. 천국의 해, 즉 사랑에서 나오는 열과 빛도 이와 같다. 천국의 해로부터 그 열, 즉 사랑이 선 안으로 흘러들면, 그 선을 열매 맺게 한다. 이것은 선한 사람들과 천사들의 경우다. 그러나 악한 사람 속으로 흘러들면 그 반대의 결과가 나온다. 악한 사람이 그 사랑을 질식시키거나 변질시키기 때문이다. 마찬가지로 천국의 빛이 선에서 비롯된 진리 안으로 흘러들면 지성과 지혜를 주지만, 악에서 비롯된 허위 안으로 들어가면 온갖 광기와 망상으로 바뀐다. 이 모든 결과는 받아들이는 데 따라 생기는 것이다. Infernal fire or love springs from a like origin as heavenly fire or love, namely, the sun of heaven, or the Lord; but it is made infernal by those who receive it. For all influx from the spiritual world varies in accordance with reception, that is, in accordance with the forms into which it flows, just as it is with the heat and light from the sun of the world. The heat from that sun flowing into shrubberies and beds of flowers produces vegetation, and draws forth grateful and sweet odors; but the same heat flowing into excremental and decaying substances produces putrefactions, and draws forth rank and disgusting stenches. In like manner the light from the same sun produces in one subject beautiful and pleasing colors, in another unbeautiful and disagreeable colors. The same is true of the heat and light from the sun of heaven, which is love. When the heat, or love, from that sun flows into good, as it does in good men and angels, it makes their good fruitful; but when it flows into the evil it produces a contrary effect, for their evils either suffocate it or pervert it. In like manner when the light of heaven flows into the truths of good it imparts intelligence and wisdom; but when it flows into the falsities of evil it is turned into insanities and fantasies of various kinds. Thus in every instance the result is in accordance with reception.
