지옥 불이라는 건 무엇이고, 이를 간다는 건 무엇인가

성경 말씀에 나오는, 꺼지지 않는 지옥 불이 무엇이고, 지옥에 있는 사람들이 이를 간다고 한 것은 무슨 뜻인지 지금까지 거의 알려지지 않았다. 사람들이 말씀의 내용을 물질적으로만 해석해 왔고, 그 영적 의미에 대해서는 생각하지 않았기 때문이다. 그래서 일부에서는 그 불을 물질적인 불로 이해해 왔고, 일부는 전반적인 고문, 또는 양심의 고통이라고 여겨왔으며, 일부는 악한 사람들을 겁주기 위한 말일 뿐이라고 생각해 온 것이다. 마찬가지로 이를 가는 것도 실제로 이를 가는 것으로 여기기도 하고, 단지 이가 맞부딪칠 정도의 공포를 의미한다고 여기기도 한다. 그러나 말씀의 영적 의미를 아는 사람은 누구나 지옥 불과 이를 간다는 것이 무엇을 의미하는지 알 수 있다. 말씀은 그 핵심이 영적이기 때문에, 말씀의 모든 표현과 그 표현의 모든 의미에는 영적 의미가 담겨 있는 것이다. 영적인 것은 사람에게 표현될 때, 오직 지연적 형태를 띨 수밖에 없다. 사람이 자연계 안에 있고, 자연계의 사물로 유추해 생각할 수밖에 없기 때문이다. 그러므로 이제 악한 사람의 영이 사후에 들어가는, 즉 그들의 영이 영계에서 겪는 ‘꺼지지 않는 불’과 ‘이를 가는’ 상태가 무엇을 의미하는지 밝혀야 하는 것이다. What eternal fire is, and what the gnashing of teeth is, which are mentioned in the Word in reference to those who are in hell, scarcely anyone as yet has known, because the contents of the Word have been thought about only in a material way, and nothing has been known about its spiritual sense. So fire has been understood by some to mean material fire, by others to mean torment in general, by others remorse of conscience, and others have held that it is mentioned merely to excite terror in the wicked. Likewise some have supposed the gnashing of teeth to mean actual gnashing, and some only a horror, such as is excited when such a collision of teeth is heard. But anyone who is acquainted with the spiritual meaning of the Word may know what eternal fire is, and what the gnashing of teeth is; for every expression and every meaning of the expressions in the Word contains a spiritual meaning, since the Word in its bosom is spiritual; and what is spiritual can be set before man only in natural forms of expression, because man is in the natural world and thinks from the things of that world. Therefore it shall now be told what is meant by “eternal fire” and “the gnashing of teeth” into which the spirits of evil men enter after death, or which their spirits, then in the spiritual world, endure.
