그러나 세상 사랑에 대해 알아둘 것이 있다. 세상 사랑은 천국적 사랑에 반대되는 정도가 자기 사랑보다는 덜하다는 사실이다. 그 안에 잠복한 악들이 덜 악하기 때문이다. 세상 사랑이란 어떤 방법으로든 다른 사람의 재물을 자기가 끌어모으려는 욕심을 말한다. 또한 그 마음을 재물에 두고, 세상을 따라가느라 영적 사랑, 즉 이웃 사랑으로부터 멀어지고, 따라서 천국과 신성으로부터 멀어지는 것을 말한다. But in respect to the love of the world: it is a love opposed to heavenly love in a less degree than love of self, because the evils hidden within it are lesser evils. The love of the world consists in one’s desiring to secure to himself, by any kind of artifice, the wealth of others, and in setting his heart upon riches, and permitting the world to draw him and lead him away from spiritual love, which is love toward the neighbor, and thus from heaven and from the Divine.

 

세상 사랑도 여러 종류가 있다. 하나는 명예만을 사랑하는 경우, 명예를 얻기 위해 재물을 사랑하는 것이다. 또 하나는 부를 축적하기 위해서 명예와 권위를 사랑하는 것이다. 또 세상 많은 쾌락을 얻는 수단으로써 재물을 사랑하는 경우도 있고, 수전노처럼 재물만을 목적으로 재물을 사랑하는 경우도 있다. 종류는 그 밖에도 많다. 재물을 추구하는 목적이 곧 재물의 쓰임새다. 사랑의 성질은 그 목적, 즉 쓰임새로 결정된다. 그 사람이 어떠한가는 추구하는 목적이 어떠한가에 의해 결정되고, 그 외의 모든 것은 그 목적을 위한 수단으로 쓰일 뿐이기 때문이다. But this love is manifold. There is a love of wealth for the sake of being exalted to honors, when these alone are loved. There is a love of honors and dignities with a view to the increase of wealth. There is a love of wealth for the sake of various uses that give delight in the world. There is a love of wealth merely for the sake of wealth, which is a miserly love; and so on. The end for the sake of which wealth is sought is called its use; and it is the end or use that gives to love its quality; for the love is such as is the end in view, and all other things merely serve it as means.
