지배에는 두 가지 종류가 있다. 하나는 그 동기가 이웃 사랑에 있고, 하나는 그 동기가 자기 사랑에 있다. 이 두 종류의 지배는 본질적으로 정반대가 된다. 이웃 사랑의 동기에서 다스리는 사람은 모든 사람의 유익을 추구하며, 쓰임새 있는 일을 하는 것, 즉 다른 사람들을 섬기는 것을 가장 사랑한다. 다른 사람을 섬긴다는 것은 교회, 나라, 사회 또는 이웃 시민 등 다른 사람의 복지를 추구하는 것이다. 그것이 그들이 사랑하고, 진심으로 즐거워하는 일이다. 이런 사람들은 높은 지위로 올라가면 기뻐한다. 그러나 그것은 명예 때문이 아니고, 더 유익한 일을 보다 높은 차원에서 더 많이 할 수 있게 되었기 때문에 기뻐하는 것이다. 천국에서의 다스림도 이와 같다. There are two kinds of dominion, one of love toward the neighbor and the other of love of self. These two dominions in their essence are direct opposites. One who rules from love toward the neighbor wills good to all, and loves nothing so much as uses, that is, serving others; which is willing good to others and performing uses, either to the church, or to the country, or to society, or to a fellow citizen. This is his love and the delight of his heart. Moreover, so far as he is exalted to dignities above others he rejoices, not for the sake of the dignities but for the sake of the uses he is then able to perform in greater abundance and of a higher order. Such dominion exists in the heavens.

 

[2] 이와 반대로 자기 사랑의 동기에서 지배하는 사람은 자기만 잘되기를 바란다. 그가 하는 일의 쓰임새는 자신의 명예와 영광을 위한 것이다. 그것이 그에게는 유일한 쓰임새다. 그가 남에게 봉사하는 목적은 자기 자신이 섬김을 받고, 명예를 얻으며, 다스릴 수 있게 되기 위한 것이다. 그는 나라나 교회에 유익한 일을 하기 위해서가 아니라 자기가 남보다 뛰어나고 영광스러워지며, 거기서 즐거움을 얻으려고 권력을 추구한다. But one who rules from the love of self wills good to no one except himself; the uses he performs are for the sake of his own honor and glory, which to him are the only uses; his end in serving others is that he may himself be served, honored, and permitted to rule; he seeks dignities not for the sake of the good offices he may render to his country and the church, but that he may gain eminence and glory and thereby the delight of his heart.

 

[3] 지배에 대한 사랑은 죽은 후에도 모든 사람에게 남아 있다. 지배의 동기가 이웃 사랑이었던 사람들에게는 천국에서도 권위가 부여된다. 하지만 지배하는 주체는 그들 자신이 아니고, 그들이 사랑하는 쓰임새다. 쓰임새가 다스릴 때, 주님이 다스리시는 것이다. 그러나 세상에서 지배의 동기가 자기 사랑이었던 사람들은 지옥에 가서 비참한 노예 신세가 된다. 나는 이 세상에서 자기 사랑으로 권력을 장악했던 사람들이 사후에 극히 비참한 무리 가운데 버려진 것을 본 적이 있다. 그중 일부는 배설물 쌓인 곳에 거주하고 있었다. Moreover this love of dominion continues with everyone after his life in the world. Those that have ruled from love toward the neighbor are entrusted with authority in the heavens; but then it is not they who rule, but the uses which they love; and when uses rule the Lord rules. But those who have ruled while in the world are in hell, and are there vile slaves. I have seen those who had power in the world, but who exercised dominion from love of self, cast out among the most vile, and some among those who are in excremental places.
