지옥 영들의 모든 괴물 같은 형상, 즉 앞에서 말한 바와 같이 남에 대한 경멸의 형상, 자기를 받들고 존경하지 않는 모든 사람에 대한 위협의 형상, 자기를 좋아하지 않는 이들에 대한 미움과 복수심의 형상을 살펴보면, 전체적으로 그들이 모든 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑의 형상이라는 것과, 이들 특별한 형상을 하는 악들은 그 기원을 바로 이들 두 사랑에 두고 있음을 분명하게 알 수 있다. 더욱이, 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 천국을 이루는 지배적인 두 사랑인 것과 마찬가지로, 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑이 지옥을 이루는 지배적인 두 사랑이라는 것, 그리고 지옥의 두 사랑과 천국의 두 사랑은 서로 완전히 정반대가 된다는 것을 나는 천국에서 들었고, 또 많은 경험을 통해 확증했다. From an inspection of these monstrous forms of spirits in the hells (which, as I have said, are all forms of contempt of others and of menaces against those who do not pay them honor and respect, also forms of hatred and revenge against those who do not favor them), it became evident that in general they were all forms of the love of self and the love of the world; and that the evils of which these are the specific forms have their origin in these two loves. Moreover, I have been told from heaven, and it has been proved to me by much experience, that these two loves, the love of self and the love of the world, rule in the hells and constitute the hells, as love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor rule in the heavens and constitute the heavens; also that the two loves that are the loves of hell and the two loves that are the loves of heaven are diametrically opposite to each other.
