자기 사랑은 자기만 잘되기를 바라는 것이고, 남이 잘되기를 바라는 것도 오직 자기를 위해서이며, 심지어 교회와 조국과 인류 사회도 자기를 위해서 잘되기를 바라는 것이다. 자기 사랑은 또 자기 평판과 명예와 영광을 위해서만 그 모든 대상에게 선을 행하는 것이다. 그리고 자기가 다른 사람을 위해 행하는 일들에서 그런 가능성이 보이지 않으면, 마음속으로 이렇게 말한다. 이것이 나와 무슨 상관이 있는가? 내가 왜 이것을 해야 하나? 이걸 해서 내가 얻는 것이 무엇인가? 따라서 그 일을 하지 않는다. 그렇다면, 자기 사랑 안에 있는 사람은 교회나 조국이나 사회나 어떤 쓰임새도 사랑하지 않고, 오직 자기만을 사랑한다는 것이 분명한 것이다. 그런 사람은 오직 자기 사랑이 주는 즐거움만 즐겁게 여긴다. 그리고 사람의 삶은 그의 사랑에서 나오는 즐거움으로 이루어지므로 그의 삶은 자기로 이루어진 삶이다. 자기로 이루어진 삶은 그 사람 자신의 것에서, 즉 그 사람의 본성에서 나오는 삶이다. 그런데 사람의 본성은 본질적으로 철두철미한 악이다. 자기를 사랑하는 사람은 또한 자기에게 속한 사람들, 즉 좁게는 자녀와 손자, 넓게는 그가 자기 사람이라 부르는, 자기와 한편인 사람들을 사랑한다. 그들을 사랑하는 것은 그 자신을 사랑하는 것이다. 왜냐하면 그가 그들은 자기의 일부고, 자기는 그들의 일부라고 여기기 때문이다. 그가 자기 사람이라 부르는 사람들에는 또한 그를 칭찬하고, 받들며, 정중히 대하는 사람들도 포함된다. The love of self is wishing well to oneself alone, and to others only for the sake of self, even to the church, one’s country, or any human society. It consists also in doing good to all these solely for the sake of one’s own reputation, honor, and glory; and unless these are seen in the uses he performs in behalf of others he says in his heart, How does it concern me? Why should I do this? What shall I get from it? and therefore he does not do it. Evidently, then, he who is in the love of self does not love the church or his country or society, nor any use, but himself alone. His delight is solely the delight of the love of self; and as the delight that comes forth from his love is what constitutes the life of man, his life is a life of self; and a life of self is a life from what is man’s own, and what is man’s own, regarded in itself, is nothing but evil. He who loves himself loves also those who belong to him, that is, in particular, his children and grandchildren, and in general, all who are at one with him, whom he calls his. To love these is to love himself, for he regards them as it were in himself, and himself in them. Among those whom he calls his are also all who commend, honor, and pay their court to him.
