사람이 천국의 사랑 안에 있는 정도만큼 그는 주님의 인도를 받는다. 주님이 그 사랑 안에 계시고, 그 사랑의 근원이시기 때문이다. 천국의 사랑을 이루는 것은 쓰임새와 선을 사랑하는 것이고, 그것을 교회와 나라와 인류 사회와 이웃 시민을 위해 행하면서 마음의 기쁨으로 감동하는 것이다. 그러나 사람은 자기 사랑 안에 있는 정도만큼 자기에게 끌려간다. 이 사랑은 쓰임새와 선을 자기를 위하여 행하는 걸로 구성된다. 그래서 사람은 자기에게 끌려가는 정도만큼 주의 인도를 받지 못한다. 그러므로 사람이 자기를 사랑하는 만큼 스스로를 신성에서 떼어놓고, 따라서 천국에서 떼어놓는 결과가 된다. 자기에게 끌려간다는 것은 자기 본성에 이끌리는 것이다. 사람의 본성은 악을 빼면 아무 것도 없다. 사람의 타고난 악은 하나님보다 자신을 더 사랑하고, 천국보다 세상을 더 사랑하는 것이기 때문이다.주286 사람이 선을 행하면서 자기를 염두에 두면, 그때마다 자기 본성, 즉 자기가 타고난 악 속으로 들어가게 된다. 왜냐하면 그럴 때 그는 자신에게서 눈을 돌려 선을 바라보지 않고, 선에서 눈을 돌려 자기를 바라보게 되기 때문이며, 따라서 그의 선 안에 하나님의 형상이 아니라 자기의 형상을 만들기 때문이다. 이런 사실도 많은 경험을 통해 내게 입증되었다. 천국 아래 북쪽과 서쪽 중간 방위에 거처하는 영들이 있었다. 이들은 성품이 좋은 영들을 본성에 빠지게 하여 온갖 종류의 악으로 끌어들이는 술책에 능한 영들이었다. 이들은 그 영들에게 공개적으로 찬사와 명예를 안기거나 은밀하게 영들이 애정을 자신에게 쏟게 함으로써 그 영들이 자기 자신을 생각하게 만드는 술책을 쓴다. 그것에 성공하면 그만큼 그들은 좋은 성품의 영들이 천국을 외면하게 만들며, 외면하는 정도만큼 그 영들의 사고를 흐리게 하고, 본성에 들어있는 악을 충동한다. Furthermore, so far as anyone is in heavenly love, which consists in loving uses and goods and being moved by delight of heart when doing them for the sake of the church, country, human society, and one’s fellow citizens, he is so far led by the Lord, because that love is the love in which the Lord is, and which is from him. But so far as anyone is in the love of self, which consists in performing uses and goods for the sake of himself, so far he is led by himself; and so far as anyone is led by himself he is not led by the Lord. And from this it also follows that so far as anyone loves himself he separates himself from the Divine, thus also from heaven. To be led by oneself is to be led by what is one’s own; and what is man’s own is nothing but evil; for man’s inherited evil consists in loving self more than God, and the world more than heaven.286 Whenever man looks to himself in the good that he does he is let into what is his own, that is, into his inherited evils; for he then looks from good to himself and from himself to good, and therefore he presents an image of himself in his good, and not an image of the Divine. That this is so has also been proved to me by experience. There are evil spirits whose dwelling places are in the middle quarter between the north and the west, beneath the heavens, who are skilled in the art of leading welldisposed spirits into their nature [proprium] and thus into evils of various kinds. This they do by leading them into thoughts about themselves, either openly by praises and honors, or secretly by directing their affections to themselves; and so far as this is done they turn the faces of the well-disposed spirits away from heaven, and to the same extent they obscure their understanding and call forth evils from what is their own.

Man’s own, which lie derives by inheritance from his parents, is nothing but dense evil (n. 210, 215, 731, 876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 10283, 10284, 10286, 10731). 사람의 본성은 하나님보다 자신을 더, 천국보다 세상을 더 사랑하는 것이며, 자신과 비교, 이웃을 아무 것도 아닌 걸로 여기며, 자기, 곧 자기 본성을 제일로 여기는 것이다. 그러니까 사람의 본성은 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑으로 이루어져 있다 (AC.694, 731, 4317, 5660). Man’s own is loving self more than God, and the world more than heaven, and making nothing of one’s neighbor in comparison with oneself, except for the sake of self, that is one’s own self; thus it consists in love of self and of the world (n. 694, 731, 4317, 5660). 모든 악은 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑이 우세할 때 이들로부터 흘러나온다 (AC.1307, 1308, 1321, 1594, 1691, 3413, 7255, 7376, 7488, 7489, 8318, 9335, 9348, 10038, 10742). All evils flow from the love of self and the love of the world when these predominate (n. 1307, 1308, 1321, 1594, 1691, 3413, 7255, 7376, 7488, 7489, 8318, 9335, 9348, 10038, 10742). 이들 악은 타인에 대한 경멸, 원한, 증오, 복수, 잔인, 속임이다 (AC.6667, 7370, 7374, 9348, 10038, 10742). These evils are contempt of others, enmity, hatred, revenge, cruelty, deceit (n. 6667, 7370, 7374, 9348, 10038, 10742). 이들 악으로부터 모든 거짓이 흘러나온다 (AC.1047, 10283, 10284, 10286). From these evils all falsity flows (n. 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286).
