또 자기 사랑은 고삐가 풀리면, 즉 법과 형벌에 대한 두려움이나 평판, 명예, 이득, 직업, 그리고 생명을 잃는 데 대한 두려움이 없어지면 없어지는 만큼 맹렬히 끝을 모르고 뻗어나가 나중에는 온 세상뿐 아니라 천국과 하나님까지 자기가 지배하려고 한다. 이런 성향이 자기 사랑으로 사는 사람 안에 잠복해 있지만, 위에서 언급한 제약들로 억눌려 있어 세상에 드러나지 않는 것이다. Again, love of self is such that so far as the reins are given it, that is, so far as external bonds are removed, which are fears of the law and its penalties, and of the loss of reputation, honor, gain, employment, and life, so far it rushes on until it finally longs to rule not only over the entire world but also over the entire heaven, and over the Divine himself, knowing no limit or end. This propensity lurks hidden in everyone who is in love of self, although it is not manifest to the world, where it is held in check by such bonds as have been mentioned.

 

그런 제약과 구속을 받지 않는 군왕들에게서 그 예를 볼 수 있다. 그들은 할 수 있는 데까지 맹렬히 영토와 나라들을 점령하고, 한없는 권력과 영광을 탐한다. 더 놀라운 것은, 현재 바빌론은 천국에까지 그 지배 세력을 넓혔고, 주님의 모든 신적 능력을 자신에게 옮겼으며, 끝없이 더 많은 권력을 욕망하고 있다는 사실이다. 그런 사람들은 사후 저세상에 들어가면 신성과 천국에 완전히 반대되며, 지옥에 속하는 것이다. 이것은 소책자 ‘최후 심판과 바빌론의 멸망’(Last Judgment and the Destruction of Babylon)에 기록했다. Everyone can see examples of this in potentates and kings who are subject to no such restraints and bonds, but rush on and subjugate provinces and kingdoms so far as they are successful, and aspire to power and glory without limit; and still more strikingly in the Babylon of this day, which has extended its dominion into heaven, and has transferred to itself all the Divine power of the Lord, and continually lusts for more. That such men, when they have entered after death the other life, are directly opposed to the Divine and to heaven, and are on the side of hell, can be seen in the little work Last Judgment and the Destruction of Babylon.
