처음에 나는 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑이 어떻게 그렇게 극악할 수 있는가, 또 어떻게 그 두 사랑 안에 있는 사람들이 그렇게 흉측한 형상으로 나타나는가 의아하게 생각했었다. 왜냐하면, 이 세상에서는 자기 사랑을 별로 문제 삼지 않고, 단지 외적인 차원에서 마음이 높아진 상태인 거만함만 문제 삼으며, 그것이 눈에 확실하게 보이므로 그것만이 유일한 자기 사랑인 줄 알기 때문이다. 더욱이, 그런 거만함으로 나타나지만 않으면, 이 세상에서는 자기 사랑을 삶의 불꽃이라 여긴다. 그 불꽃의 자극으로 사람은 일도 하려고 하고, 제 역할을 다하는 것이며, 만일 일에서 아무 명예나 영광을 얻을 가망이 없으면, 사람의 마음은 나태해질 것이라는 것이다. 사람들은 이렇게 묻는다. 타인의 칭찬과 명예를 얻기 위해서가 아닌, 즉 남들의 존경과 높임을 받기 위해서가 아닌, 다른 목적으로 어느 누가 가치 있고, 유용하며, 뛰어난 일을 행한 적이 있는가? 그런 행동이 영광과 명예에 대한 사랑이라는 불꽃 외에, 따라서 자기 자신 외에 어디에 기인할 수 있는가? 이런 이유로, 세상에는 자기 사랑이 본질적으로 지옥의 지배적인 사랑이며, 사람 안에 지옥을 만드는 사랑이라는 것이 알려져 있지 않은 것이다. 그러므로 나는 먼저 자기 사랑이 무엇인지 설명하고, 그다음에 모든 악과 허위는 그 사랑을 원천으로 하여 생겨난다는 것을 밝히려 한다. At first I wondered how it is that love of self and love of the world could be so diabolical, and how those who are in these loves could be such monsters in appearance; for in the world not much thought is given to love of self, but only to that elated state of mind in external matters which is called haughtiness, and that alone, being so apparent to the sight, is regarded as love of self. Furthermore, love of self, when it is not so displayed, is believed in the world to be the very fire of life by which man is stimulated to seek employment and to perform uses, and if he found no honor or glory in these his mind would grow torpid. It is asked, Who has ever done any worthy, useful, and distinguished deed except for the sake of being praised and honored by others, or regarded with esteem and honor by others? And can this be from any other source than the fire of love for glory and honor, consequently for self? For this reason, it is unknown in the world that love of self, regarded in itself, is the love that rules in hell and constitutes hell in man. This being so I will first describe what the love of self is, and then will show that all evils and their falsities spring from that love as their fountain.
