주께서 지옥을 다스리신다

주께서 지옥들을 다스리시는 방법을 간략히 설명하겠다. 전체적으로 지옥은 천국에서 흘러나오는 신적 선과 신적 진리로 된 입류, 즉 지옥에서 발산하는 전체적인 기운을 저지하고 누르는 보편적 입류에 의해서, 그리고 각 천국과 천국 각 공동체마다에서 나오는 개별적 입류에 의해서 다스려진다. 천사들은 허락하심에 의해 지옥 안을 응시함으로써 그 광기와 소란을 제지하며, 때로는 지옥에 보내져 직접 그 광기와 소란을 누그러뜨리기도 한다. 그러나 일반적으로 지옥의 모든 사람은 자기들의 두려움에 의해 다스려진다. 일부는 세상에서 심어져 아직도 본성에 남아 있는 두려움에 의해서 다스려진다. 그러나 이 두려움은 충분하지 않고 점차 물러가기 때문에, 그들은 징벌에 대한 두려움으로 다스려진다. 특히 그들의 악행을 저지하는 것은 징벌이다. 지옥에는 다양한 형벌이 있다. 악에 따라서 가볍기도 하고, 무겁기도 하다. 대부분의 경우 더 사악하고, 교활함과 술책이 뛰어난 이들, 그리고 나머지를 벌과 그 공포로 굴복시키고, 종으로 삼는 능력을 가진 이들이 그들 위에 군림한다. 그러나 그 지배자들은 정해진 한도를 감히 넘지 못한다. 지옥에 있는 사람들의 난폭함과 광포를 억제하는 유일한 수단은 형벌에의 두려움임을 이해해야 할 것이다. 그 외의 다른 어떤 방법도 없다. How the hells are ruled by the Lord shall be briefly explained. In general the hells are ruled by a general outflow from the heavens of Divine good and Divine truth whereby the general endeavor flowing forth from the hells is checked and restrained; also by a particular outflow from each heaven and from each society of heaven. The hells are ruled in particular by means of the angels, to whom it is granted to look into the hells and to restrain insanities and disturbances there; and sometimes angels are sent to them who moderate these insanities and disturbances by their presence. But in general all in the hells are ruled by means of their fears. Some are ruled by fears implanted in the world and still inherent in them; but as these fears are not sufficient, and gradually subside, they are ruled by fears of punishments; and it is especially by these that they are deterred from doing evil. The punishments in hell are manifold, lighter or more severe in accordance with the evils. For the most part the more wicked, who excel in cunning and in artifices, and who are able to hold the rest in subjection and servitude by means of punishments and consequent terror, are set over them; but these governors dare not pass beyond the limits prescribed to them. It must be understood that the sole means of restraining the violence and fury of those who are in the hells is the fear of punishment. There is no other way.
