주께서 지옥을 다스리신다

앞의 제1부 천국에서 곳곳에(특히 2–6항) 밝혔듯이, 천국의 하나님은 주님이시고, 따라서 천국 전체를 주께서 다스리신다. 천국의 지옥에 대한, 지옥의 천국에 대한 관계는 서로 상대편과 상반되게 움직이는 두 정반대의 사물간의 관계와 같다. 이 둘의 작용과 반작용에 의해 균형이 존재하고, 그 균형이 그 둘의 작용과 반작용에 속한 모든 것에 항상성을 부여한다. 따라서 천국과 지옥 중 하나를 다스리는 분이 나머지도 다스리실 필요가 있다. 왜냐하면 동일한 주님이 지옥의 저항을 누르고 그곳의 광기를 막지 않으시면 균형은 깨어지고, 그와 함께 모든 것이 소멸될 것이기 때문이다. Above, in treating of heaven it has been everywhere shown (especially in n. 2–6) that the God of heaven is the Lord, thus that the whole government of the heavens is the Lord’s government. And as the relation of heaven to hell and of hell to heaven is like the relation between two opposites which mutually act contrary to each other, and from the action and reaction of which an equilibrium results, which gives permanence to all things of their action and reaction, so in order that all things and each thing may be kept in equilibrium it is necessary that he who rules the one should rule the other; for unless the same Lord restrained the uprisings from the hells and checked insanities there, the equilibrium would perish and everything with it.
