천국에 이르는 삶을 사는 건 생각만큼 어려운 게 아니다

It Is Not So Difficult to Live the Life That Leads to Heaven As Is Believed

경건하고 거룩하게 살기 위해 세상일을 떠나 산 사람들, 또 여러 가지 방법으로 스스로를 학대하면서 그것이 세상을 버리고, 육신의 욕망을 정복하는 길이라고 믿은 사람들과 저세상에서 얘기할 기회가 나에게 허락되었었다. 그러나 이들의 대부분이 그런 처량한 생활을 자처했고, 오직 이 세상에서만 가능한 삶인 이웃 사랑의 생활에서 떠났기 때문에, 그들은 천사들과 함께 어울릴 수 없었다. 천사들의 삶은 축복의 상태에서 오는 기쁜 삶이고, 선을 행하는 삶, 즉 이웃 사랑으로 일하는 삶이기 때문이다. 게다가 세상의 일을 하지 않고, 은둔해 산 사람들은 그들 자신이 공로가 있다는 생각으로 고무되어 끊임없이 천국을 원하고, 천국의 기쁨이 무엇인지 전혀 모르면서 그 기쁨을 보상으로 받으려고 한다. 그런 사람들을 천사들과 천사의 기쁨 가운데 들게 하면, 그 기쁨은 공로를 버리고, 적극적 노동과 실제적인 일을 하는 데 있고, 그렇게 성취된 선의 결과인 축복에 있으므로, 그들은 자기들이 믿어온 바와 완전히 다른 것을 본 듯 무척 놀란다. 그들은 천사의 기쁨을 받아들이지 못하기 때문에 그곳을 떠나 세상에서 자기와 비슷하게 산 동질의 영들에게 합류한다. I have been permitted to talk with some in the other life who had withdrawn from worldly affairs that they might live in a pious and holy manner, also with some who had afflicted themselves in various ways, believing that they were thereby renouncing the world and subduing the lusts of the flesh. But as most of these have thus acquired a sorrowful life and had withdrawn from the life of charity, which life can be lived only in the midst of the world, they are incapable of being affiliated with angels, because the life of angels is a life of joy resulting from a state of blessedness, and consists in performing good deeds, which are works of charity. Moreover, those who have lived a life withdrawn from worldly employments are inflamed with the idea of their own merit, and are continually desiring heaven on that account, and thinking of heavenly joy as a reward, utterly ignorant of what heavenly joy is. When such are admitted into the company of angels and into their joy, which discards merit and consists in active labors and practical services, and in a blessedness resulting from the good thereby accomplished, they are astonished like one who has found out something quite foreign to his belief; and since they are not receptive of that joy they go away and ally themselves with spirits of their own kind that have lived in the world a life like their own.

 

[2] 교회에 빠짐없이 출석하고, 기도하고 통회하는 등 외적으로 거룩하게 살았고, 그러면서 계속 자기만 염두에 두었고, 그 모든 행위로 자기들은 존경과 영광을 받을 것이며, 죽은 뒤에는 마침내 성자로 추앙될 거라고 생각한 사람들은 저세상에서 천국에 있지 않다. 그 모든 것을 자기 자신을 위해서 행했기 때문이다. 그들이 스스로 빠져든 자기 사랑에 의해 신적 진리를 더럽혔으므로, 그들 중 일부는 자기를 신이라고 여길 정도로 광적이며, 따라서 같은 부류와 함께 지옥에 있다. 일부는 교활하고 기만적이므로 속이는 자들의 지옥에 있다. 이들은 교활한 기술과 방법으로 경건한 품행을 유지해 일반 사람들이 그들을 신의 거룩함을 지닌 사람이라 믿을 정도였던 사람들이다. But those who have lived an outwardly holy life, constantly attending church and praying and afflicting their souls, and at the same time have thought constantly of themselves that they would be esteemed and honored for all this above others, and finally after death would be accounted saints—such in the other life are not in heaven because they have done all this for the sake of themselves. And as they have defiled Divine truths by the self-love in which they have immersed them, some of them are so insane as to think themselves gods; and are consequently in hell among those like themselves. Some are cunning and deceitful, and are in the hells of the deceitful. These are such as by means of cunning arts and devices have maintained such pious conduct as induced the common people to believe that they possessed a Divine sanctity.

 

[3] 교황 교파의 많은 성자가 이런 성격이다. 나는 허락하심에 따라 그들 중 몇 사람과 대화를 나누었다. 그때 그들의 일생이 세상에 있을 때와 그 이후의 상태 그대로 분명하게 드러났다. 이상 모든 것을 밝힌 것은, 천국에 이르는 생활은 세상을 떠난 삶이 아니라 세상 속의 삶이라는 것과, 이웃 사랑의 생활은 이 세상에서만 가능한데, 그것을 떠난 경건 생활은 사람을 천국으로 이끌지 못한다는 것을 알리기 위해서다. 오직 이웃 사랑의 삶만이 천국으로 인도한다. 이웃 사랑의 삶이란, 모든 직업, 모든 일을 함에 있어서 내적인 동기, 즉 천국적인 동기로 정직하고 올바르게 행하는 것을 말한다. 사람이 하나님의 법에 따르기 위해 정직하고 올바르게 행할 때, 그 생활의 동기는 내적이고 천국적인 것이 된다. 그런 생활을 하는 것은 어렵지 않다. 그러나 이웃 사랑의 생활을 떠난 경건한 생활을 하기는 어렵다. 그런 생활이 천국으로 이끈다고 믿는 정도만큼 그것은 오히려 천국으로부터 멀어지게 하는 것이다.주283 Of this character are many of the Roman Catholic saints. I have been permitted to talk with some of them, and their life was then plainly disclosed, such as it had been in the world and as it was afterwards. All this has been said to make known that the life that leads to heaven is not a life withdrawn from the world, but a life in the world; and that a life of piety separated from a life of charity, which is possible only in the world, does not lead to heaven; but a life of charity does; and a life of charity consists in acting honestly and justly in every employment, in every business, and in every work, from an interior, that is, from a heavenly, motive; and this motive is in that life whenever man acts honestly and justly because doing so is in accord with the Divine laws. Such a life is not difficult. But a life of piety separate from a life of charity is difficult; and as much as such a life is believed to lead toward heaven so much it leads away from heaven.283

 

 

주283. 체어리티의 생활과 동떨어진 경건 생활은 아무 소용이 없지만, 반대로 체어리티와 함께하는 경건 생활은 범사에 유익하다 (AC.8252, 8253). A life of piety separated from a life of charity is of no avail, but united with charity it is profitable for all things (n. 8252, 8253). 이웃을 향한 체어리티, 즉 이웃 사랑은 모든 일과 직업에 있어 선을 행하고, 올바르고 공정하게 하는 것이다 (AC.8120–8122). Charity to the neighbor consists in doing what is good, just, and right in every work and in every employment (n. 8120–8122). 이웃을 향한 체어리티는 사람이 생각하고, 의도하고, 행하는 크고작은 모든 일에도 있다(AC.8124). Charity to the neighbor takes in all things and each thing that a man thinks, wills, and does (n. 8124). 체어리티의 생활은 주님의 명령을 따르는 생활이다(AC.3249). A life of charity is a life in accordance with the Lord’s commandments (n. 3249). 주님의 명령을 따르며 사는 것은 주님을 사랑하는 것이다 (AC.10143, 10153, 10310, 10578, 10645). Living in accordance with the Lord’s commandments is loving the Lord (n. 10143, 10153, 10310, 10578, 10645). 참된 체어리티는 아무런 공로를 주장하지 않는다. 왜냐하면 그것은 내적 애정과 그로 인한 즐거움에서 오는 것이기 때문이다 (AC.2371, 2380, 2400, 3816, 3887, 6388–6393). Genuine charity claims no merit, because it is from interior affection and consequent delight (n. 2371, 2380, 2400, 3816, 3887, 6388–6393). 사람은 사후에도 생전 살던 체어리티의 삶을 계속해서 산다(AC.8256). Man continues to be after death such as was his life of charity in the world (n. 8256). 천국의 복이 주님으로부터 체어리티의 삶 가운데로 흘러들어온다(AC.2363). Heavenly blessedness flows in from the Lord into a life of charity (n. 2363). 그저 생각만으로는 아무도 천국에 들어가지 못한다. 기꺼이 의도하고 행함이 수반되어야만 한다 (AC.2401, 3459). Mere thinking admits no one into heaven; it must be accompanied by willing and doing good (n. 2401, 3459). 선을 행함이 선을 의도하고 선을 생각함과 조인하지 않는 한, 구원도 속 사람과 겉 사람 간 결합도 없다(AC.3987). Unless doing good is joined with willing good and thinking good there is no salvation nor any conjunction of the internal man with the external (n. 3987).
