천국에 이르는 삶을 사는 건 생각만큼 어려운 게 아니다

It Is Not So Difficult to Live the Life That Leads to Heaven As Is Believed

천국 생활을 하는 것은 일부에서 믿고 있는 것처럼 그렇게 어렵지 않다는 것을 보여 주는 또 다른 사실이 있다. 어떤 것이 부정직하고 부당한 행위임을 알면서도 거기 마음이 끌리는 일이 생길 때, 단지 사람은 이것은 하나님의 가르침에 위배되기 때문에 이렇게 할 수 없다고 생각하면 된다는 사실이다. That it is not so difficult to live the life of heaven as some believe can now be seen from this, that when anything presents itself to a man that he knows to be dishonest and unjust, but to which his mind is borne, it is simply necessary for him to think that it ought not to be done because it is opposed to the Divine precepts.

 

사람이 그렇게 생각하는 데 익숙해지고, 따라서 그렇게 생각하는 것이 습관화되면, 그는 점차로 천국과 결합 된다. 그리고 사람이 천국과 결합 되는 정도만큼 그 마음의 높은 차원들이 열린다. 또 그것이 열리는 만큼 그는 부정직하고 부당한 것은 무엇이든 식별하게 되고, 그런 악을 식별하는 정도만큼 그 악을 물리칠 수 있다. 사람은 알지 못하는 악은 물리칠 수 없기 때문이다. 사람이 이런 상태가 될 수 있는 것은 자유가 있기 때문이다. 어느 누가 자유롭지 않은 상태에서 그렇게 생각할 수 있겠는가? 사람이 이렇게 시작 단계를 만들면, 주님은 그 사람 안에 모든 선함을 북돋우시고, 그에게 악을 식별할 능력뿐 아니라 악한 의지를 자제할 힘을 주시고, 마침내 악에서 돌아서게 하신다. 이것이 다음 주님의 말씀, If a man accustoms himself so to think, and from so doing establishes a habit of so thinking, he is gradually conjoined to heaven; and so far as he is conjoined to heaven the higher regions of his mind are opened; and so far as these are opened he sees whatever is dishonest and unjust, and so far as he sees these evils they can be dispersed, for no evil can be dispersed until it is seen. Into this state man is able to enter because of his freedom, for is not anyone able from his freedom to so think? And when man has made a beginning the Lord quickens all that is good in him, and causes him not only to see evils to be evils, but also to refrain from willing them, and finally to turn away from them. This is meant by the Lord’s words,

 

이는 내 멍에는 쉽고 내 짐은 가벼움이라 하시니라 (마11:30) My yoke is easy and my burden is light (Matt. 11:30).

 

의 의미다. 그러나 여기서 우리가 알아야 할 점은, 사람이 의도적으로 악을 행할수록 위와 같이 생각하고, 악을 거부하기가 점점 더 어려워진다는 사실이다. 악을 의도적으로 행하는 정도만큼 사람은 그 악에 익숙해져서 더 이상 그 악을 식별하지 못하게 되면, 마침내 그 악을 사랑하게 되고, 그 사랑이 주는 즐거움 때문에 악을 변명하며, 온갖 그릇된 생각으로 그 악을 확증하고, 그 악은 행해도 되는 것이며, 선한 것이라고 단정하게 된다. 이것이 청년 초기부터 전혀 자제하지 않고 악에 빠졌으며, 마음속으로 신을 거부한 사람들의 운명이다. But it must be understood that the difficulty of so thinking and of resisting evils increases so far as man from his will does evils, for in the same measure he becomes accustomed to them until he no longer sees them, and at length loves them and from the delight of his love excuses them, and confirms them by every kind of fallacy, and declares them to be allowable and good. This is the fate of those who in early youth plunge into evils without restraint, and also reject Divine things from the heart.
