천국에 이르는 삶을 사는 건 생각만큼 어려운 게 아니다

사람의 삶을 합리적으로 고찰해 보면, 세 차원으로 되어 있음을 알 수 있다. 영적, 도덕적, 사회적인 삶이 그것이다. 이 세 삶은 서로 구분된다. 어떤 사람들은 사회적 삶은 살지만, 도덕적이거나 영적인 삶은 살지 않는다. 어떤 이들은 도덕적인 삶을 살지만, 영적 삶은 살지 않으며, 어떤 이들은 사회적이고 도덕적인 삶을 삶과 동시에 영적 삶을 산다. 이 가장 나중의 경우가 천국에 가는 삶을 살고 있는 사람들이다. 반면 먼저의 두 경우는 천국 삶과 동떨어진 세상의 삶을 살고 있다. 그렇다면 먼저 우리는 영적 삶이 자연적 삶인 세상 삶과 동떨어진 것이 아님을 알 수 있다. 영적 삶은 자연적 삶에 마치 영이 몸에 결합 되듯 결합 되어 있다. 만일 그 둘이 분리된다면, 바로 위에서 말했듯이 기초 없는 집처럼 될 것이다. 사실상 도덕적이고 사회적인 삶은 영적 삶의 활동이다. 선한 의도가 영적 삶의 본질이고, 선한 행위가 도덕적 사회적 삶의 본질이기 때문이다. 그 둘이 서로에게서 떨어져 나간다면, 영적 삶은 단지 생각과 말에 머물 것이며, 그 의도는 지지기반이 없어 약해지고 없어질 것이다. 그런데 이 의도야말로 사람의 영적 실체인 것이다. When the life of man is scanned and explored by rational insight it is found to be threefold, namely, spiritual, moral, and civil, with these three lives distinct from each other. For there are men who live a civil life and not as yet a moral and spiritual life; and there are men who live a moral life and not as yet a spiritual life; and there are those who live a civil life, a moral life, and a spiritual life at the same time. These live the life of heaven; but the former live the life of the world separated from the life of heaven. This shows, in the first place, that the spiritual life is not a life separated from natural life or the life of the world, but is joined with it as the soul is joined with its body, and if it were separated it would be, as was said, like living in a house that has no foundation. For moral and civil life is the active plane of the spiritual life, since to will well is the province of the spiritual life, and to act well of the moral and civil life, and if the latter is separated from the former the spiritual life consists solely of thought and speech, and the will, left with no support, recedes; and yet the will is the very spiritual part of man.
