천국에 이르는 삶을 사는 건 생각만큼 어려운 게 아니다

It Is Not So Difficult to Live the Life That Leads to Heaven As Is Believed

영적인 삶, 천국으로 가는 삶을 사는 것은 어렵다고 믿는 사람들이 있다. 그들은 세상을 버려야 하고, 육욕이라고 하는 욕망을 벗어야 하며, 영적으로 살아야 한다는 말을 듣고 이것을 이해하기를, 주로 재물과 명예로 이루어진 세상 것을 버리고, 끊임없이 신과 구원과 영생을 경건히 묵상해야 하며, 일생을 기도와 말씀과 신앙 서적을 읽는 데 바쳐야 한다고 여긴다. 이것이 세상을 버린다는 것, 육적으로 살지 않고 영적으로 산다는 것에 대한 그들의 생각이다. 그러나 그것은 전혀 옳지 않다는 것을 나는 많은 경험과 천사들과의 대화를 통해 알게 되었다. There are some who believe that to live the life that leads to heaven, which is called the spiritual life, is difficult, because they have been told that man must renounce the world, must divest himself of the lusts called the lusts of the body and the flesh, and must live spiritually; and they understand this to mean that they must discard worldly things, which consist chiefly in riches and honors; that they must walk continually in pious meditation on God, salvation, and eternal life; and must spend their life in prayers and in reading the Word and pious books. Such is their idea of renouncing the world, and living in the spirit and not in the flesh. But that this is not at all true it has been given me to know by much experience and from conversation with the angels.

 

내가 알게 된 것은, 세상을 버리고 그런 식으로 영적 생활이라는 것을 하는 사람은 하늘의 기쁨을 받을 수 없는 슬픈 삶을 얻는다는 사실이다. 모든 사람의 삶은 죽은 뒤에도 똑같기 때문이다. 그와 반대로 천국의 삶을 받기 위해서는 사람은 세상 속에서 살고, 일과 직업이 있어야 하며, 도덕적 사회적 생활을 해야 하고, 그것을 통해서 영적 삶을 얻어야 한다. 그 밖의 다른 어떤 방법으로도 사람 안에 영적 삶이 형성될 수 없고, 그의 영이 천국에 합당하게 준비될 수 없다. 내적인 생활을 하면서 동시에 외적인 생활을 하지 않는 것은 기초 없는 집에 사는 것과 같아서 점차 가라앉거나 금이 가고 조각나거나 흔들려 마침내 무너지기 때문이다. I have learned, in fact, that those who renounce the world and live in the spirit in this manner acquire a sorrowful life that is not receptive of heavenly joy, since everyone’s life continues the same after death. On the contrary, to receive the life of heaven a man must needs live in the world and engage in its business and employments, and by means of a moral and civil life there receive the spiritual life. In no other way can the spiritual life be formed in man, or his spirit prepared for heaven; for to live an internal life and not at the same time an external life is like dwelling in a house that has no foundation, that gradually sinks or becomes cracked and rent asunder, or totters till it falls.
