사후 사람의 첫 번째 상태

이 세상 삶 직후에 따르는 사람의 영의 상태가 이렇기 때문에, 세상에서 그를 알고 있던 사람들과 친구들은 그를 알아본다. 영들이 그를 알아보는 것은 다만 그의 얼굴과 말뿐 아니라 그에게 다가갔을 때 그의 생명의 영향권을 지각하기 때문이다. 내생에서는 누가 어떤 사람을 생각할 때마다 생각 속에 상대의 얼굴을 떠올리고, 동시에 상대의 삶에 관한 여러 가지를 떠올린다. 그러면 그 상대방은 마치 누가 보냈거나 부른 것처럼 그 자리에 나타난다. 영계에서 이런 일이 가능한 것은, 거기서는 생각들이 교통되며, 자연계에서와 같은 공간이 없기 때문이다(191–199항). 그러므로 모든 사람은 내생에 들자마자 친구들, 친척들, 그리고 그를 조금이라도 알았던 사람들이 그를 알아본다. 그들은 서로 얘기를 나누고, 세상에서의 관계에 따라 모인다. 나는 세상에서 온 사람들이 자기 친구들을 다시 만나 기뻐하고, 그 친구들도 그들이 와서 기뻐했다는 말을 자주 들었다. 일반적으로 남편과 아내는 서로 만나 크게 기뻐하고 함께 지내는데 그 기간은 세상에서 함께 살 때 느낀 기쁨의 정도에 따라 길기도 하고 짧기도 하다. 그러나 그들이 천국적 사랑에 의한 마음의 결합인 참된 결혼애로 하나되지 못했으면 얼마간 함께 지내다가 헤어진다. 또는 만일 그들의 마음이 부조화했고 속으로 반감이 있었으면 그들은 격한 적대감을 드러내고 때로 싸우기도 한다. 그러면서도 그들이 둘째 상태에 들어갈 때까지 헤어지지 않는다. 그 둘째 상태에 대해서도 곧 설명하겠다. The state of man’s spirit that immediately follows his life in the world being such, he is then recognized by his friends and by those he had known in the world; for this is something that spirits perceive not only from one’s face and speech but also from the sphere of his life when they draw near. Whenever anyone in the other life thinks about another he brings his face before him in thought, and at the same time many things of his life; and when he does this the other becomes present, as if he had been sent for or called. This is so in the spiritual world because thoughts there are shared, and there is no such space there as in the natural world (see above, n. 191–199). So all, as soon as they enter the other life, are recognized by their friends, their relatives, and those in any way known to them; and they talk with one another, and afterward associate in accordance with their friendships in the world. I have often heard that those that have come from the world were rejoiced at seeing their friends again, and that their friends in turn were rejoiced that they had come. Very commonly husband and wife come together and congratulate each other, and continue together, and this for a longer or shorter time according to their delight in living together in the world. But if they had not been united by a true marriage love, which is a conjunction of minds by heavenly love, after remaining together for a while they separate. Or if their minds had been discordant and were inwardly adverse, they break forth into open enmity, and sometimes into combat; nevertheless they are not separated until they enter the second state, which will be treated of presently.
