세상에서 방금 온 영들의 삶이 그들의 자연계에서의 삶과 다르지 않은 데다가, 사후 생활의 상태나 천국, 지옥에 대해 아는 것이라곤 말씀의 문자상의 의미와 그에 따른 설교에서 배워온 것 외에는 아무 것도 없기 때문에, 그들은 먼저 자기가 몸을 입고 있고, 세상에서 있었던 감각이 그대로 있으며, 눈에 보이는 것도 비슷하다는 사실에 놀란다. 그러고 나서 천국과 지옥은 어떤 곳이고, 어디 있는지 몹시 알고 싶어한다. 그러면 그들의 친구들이 영원한 삶의 조건들을 설명해 주고, 여러 곳에 데려가고, 많은 사람을 소개한다. 때로는 도시들과 정원, 공원으로 데리고 가 주로 그들의 외면을 즐겁게 하는 화려한 것들을 보여 준다. 그 후 영혼의 사후 상태와 천국과 지옥에 대해서 그들이 육신을 입고 살 때 갖고 있었던 개념들을 그들에게 하나씩 보여 준다. 그러면 그들은 그런 문제에 대해 완전히 무지했던 자기 자신과 교회에 대해 분개하기까지 한다. 거의 모든 영이 자기가 천국에 가게 될 것인지 매우 궁금해한다. 대부분 자기는 천국에 갈 거라고 믿는다. 세상에서 도덕적이고 사회규범에 맞게 살았다고 생각하기 때문이다. 그들은 선인이나 악인이나 겉으로는 남에게 선을 행하고, 예배에 참석해 설교를 듣고 기도하는 등 비슷하게 산다는 것을 전혀 생각하지 않는다. 또 외적인 행동과 외적인 예배행위는 아무 소용이 없고, 오직 그 외적인 것이 나오는 근원인 내면이 중요하다는 것을 전혀 모른다. 내면이 무엇인지 아는 사람은 수천 명에 한 사람도 거의 없다. 천국과 교회를 자기 내면에서 찾아야 한다는 것을 사람들은 모르고 있는 것이다. 더욱이 외적인 행위들의 본질은 행위의 근원인 그 속의 의도와 생각, 사랑과 신앙에 의해 결정된다는 것은 더구나 알려져 있지 않다. 그것을 알려준다 해도 그들은 의도와 생각이 중요하다는 것을 이해하지 못하고, 단지 말과 행동만 중요시한다. 오늘날 기독교 문화권에서 내세에 들어가는 사람들의 대부분이 그렇다. As the life of spirits recently from the world is not unlike their life in the natural world, and as they know nothing about their state of life after death and nothing about heaven and hell except what they have learned from the sense of the letter of the Word and preaching from it, they are at first surprised to find themselves in a body and in every sense that they had in the world, and seeing like things; and they become eager to know what heaven is, what hell is, and where they are. Therefore their friends tell them about the conditions of eternal life, and take them about to various places and into various companies, and sometimes into cities, and into gardens and parks, showing them chiefly such magnificent things as delight the externals in which they are. They are then brought in turn into those notions about the state of their soul after death, and about heaven and hell, that they had entertained in the life of the body, even until they feel indignant at their total ignorance of such things, and at the ignorance of the church also. Nearly all are anxious to know whether they will get to heaven. Most of them believe that they will, because of their having lived in the world a moral and civil life, never considering that the bad and the good live a like life outwardly, alike doing good to others, attending public worship, hearing sermons, and praying; and wholly ignorant that external deeds and external acts of worship are of no avail, but only the internals from which the externals proceed. There is hardly one out of thousands who knows what internals are, and that it is in them that man must find heaven and the church. Still less is it known that outward acts are such as the intentions and thoughts are, and the love and faith in these from which they spring. And even when taught they fail to comprehend that thinking and willing are of any avail, but only speaking and acting. Such for the most part are those that go at this day from the Christian world into the other life.
