사후 사람의 첫 번째 상태

사람이 죽은 뒤 천국이나 지옥으로 가기 전에 거치는 세 상태가 있다. 첫째 상태는 사람의 외면의 상태이고, 둘째 상태는 그의 내면의 상태이고, 셋째 상태는 준비하는 상태이다. 이런 상태들을 사람은 중간 영계에서 거친다. 그러나 이런 상태들을 거치지 않고, 죽은 후 곧바로 천국에 올라가거나 지옥에 떨어지는 사람들도 있다. 곧바로 천국에 올라가는 사람들은 세상에 살 때 거듭남이 완료되어 천국에 갈 준비가 된 사람들이다. 자연적인 불순한 것을 몸과 함께 벗어버리기만 하면 되도록 거듭남이 완료되고 준비된 사람들은 즉시 천사들이 천국으로 데려간다. 죽은 뒤 곧 그렇게 올라가는 사람들을 나는 보았다. 반면, 내면은 사악하면서 겉으로는 선을 가장한 사람들, 그렇게 선을 속임의 수단으로 사용하여 그들의 악함을 속임수로 가득 채운 사람들은 곧바로 지옥에 떨어진다. 나는 그런 사람들이 죽은 뒤 즉시 지옥에 떨어지는 것을 보았는데 그중 가장 기만적인 자 중 하나는 머리를 아래로 하고 발을 위로 한 채였고, 다른 자들은 또 다른 식으로 떨어졌다. 죽은 다음 곧바로 동굴로 던져져 중간 영계에 있는 사람들로부터 격리되는 영들이 있다. 이들은 차례로 동굴에서 끌려 나왔다가 다시 들어간다. 이들은 겉으로는 사회적 규범을 지켰지만, 이웃에 대한 행위의 의도가 악한 사람들이다. 그러나 이 모두는 중간 영계에 머물면서 신적 질서에 따라 천국이나 지옥으로 가게 되는 준비 과정을 거치는 사람들에 비하면 아주 적은 수다. There are three states that man passes through after death before he enters either heaven or hell. The first state is the state of his exteriors, the second state the state of his interiors, and the third his state of preparation. These states man passes through in the world of spirits. There are some, however, that do not pass through them; but immediately after death are either taken up into heaven or cast into hell. Those that are immediately taken up into heaven are those that have been regenerated in the world and thereby prepared for heaven. Those that have been so regenerated and prepared that they need simply to cast off natural impurities with the body are at once taken up by the angels into heaven. I have seen them so taken up soon after the hour of death. On the other hand, those that have been inwardly wicked while maintaining an outward appearance of goodness, and have thus filled up the measure of their wickedness by artifices, using goodness as a means of deceiving—these are at once cast into hell. I have seen some such cast into hell immediately after death, one of the most deceitful with his head downward and feet upward, and others in other ways. There are some that immediately after death are cast into caverns and are thus separated from those that are in the world of spirits, and are taken out from these and put back again by turns. They are such as have dealt wickedly with the neighbor under civil pretenses. But all these are few in comparison with those that are retained in the world of spirits, and are there prepared in accordance with Divine order for heaven or for hell.
