(4) 천국적 사랑에서 나오지 않은 신앙은 사람 안에 보존되지 않는다. Unless faith is from heavenly love it does not endure in man.

많은 경험을 통해서 나는 이것을 분명히 알게 되었다. 이것에 관해 내가 듣고 본 것을 다 합하면 책 한 권이 될 것이다. 나는 증언할 수 있다. 천국적 영적 사랑 없이 육신적 세상적 사랑만 있는 사람에게는 전혀 신앙이 없고, 신앙을 갖는 것이 불가능하다. 그들은 단지 자기의 사랑에 쓸모가 있기 때문에, 어떤 것이 진리라는 신조나 지식을 갖고 있을 뿐이다. 신앙이 있노라고 주장하는 사람들 몇을 신앙이 있는 사람들에게 데려다 놓은 적이 있는데, 이들은 그들과 대화를 하면서 그들이 전혀 신앙이 없다는 것을 꿰뚫어 보았다. 후에 그들은 진리와 말씀을 믿기만 하는 것은 신앙이 아니며, 신앙이란 천국적 사랑에서 진리를 사랑하고, 내적 애정에서 그것을 의도하고 행하는 것이라고 실토했다. 게다가 그들은 자기들이 믿음이라 불러왔던 신조가 그저 겨울철의 빛 같은 것임을 보게 되었다. 그 빛에는 열이 담겨 있지 않아 지상의 모든 것은 서리맞고 얼어붙어 눈에 묻혀버리는 것이다. 따라서 천국의 빛이 닿으면, 그들의 신조는 단지 소멸될 뿐 아니라 짙은 어둠으로 변해 자신을 볼 수 없게 한다. 동시에 그들의 내면은 극히 어두워져 그들은 아무 것도 이해할 수 없게 되고, 결국 허위로 인해 정신이상이 된다. 그러므로 그런 사람들이 말씀과 교회의 가르침에서 알고 있던, 자기들 신앙의 진리라 여겼던 모든 진리는 그들에게서 떨어져 나가고, 그 대신 그들 삶의 악함과 일치하는 모든 허위가 그들에게 흡수된다. 이는 그들 모두가 자기의 사랑과 그 사랑에 맞는 허위 속으로 내려가 있기 때문이고, 그렇게 되면 그들은 진리가 자기 악에서 나온 허위에 반대되므로 진리를 혐오하고 미워하며, 따라서 진리를 거부하기 때문이다. 나는 천국과 지옥에 관한 내 모든 경험을 통해 증언할 수 있다. 교리에 근거해서 믿음만으로 다 된다고 한, 생활이 악한 사람들은 모두 지옥에 있다. 그런 사람들 수천 명이 지옥에 던져지는 것을 나는 보았다. (이들에 관한 기록은 최후 심판과 바빌론의 멸망이라는 책에 나와 있다. ) This has been made clear to me by so much experience that if everything I have seen and heard respecting it were collected, it would fill a volume. This I can testify, that those who are in corporeal and worldly love apart from heavenly and spiritual love have no faith whatever, and are incapable of having any; they have nothing but knowledge or a persuasion that a thing is true because it serves their love. Some of those who claimed that they had faith were brought to those who had faith, and when they communicated with them they perceived that they had no faith at all; and afterwards they confessed that merely believing what is true and believing the Word is not faith, but that faith is loving truth from heavenly love, and willing and doing it from interior affection. Moreover, they were shown that their persuasion which they called faith was merely like the light of winter, in which light, because it has no heat in it, all things on the earth are bound up in frost, become torpid, and lie buried under the snow. As soon, therefore, as the light of persuasive faith in them is touched by the rays of the light of heaven it is not only extinguished but is turned into a dense darkness, in which no one can see himself; and at the same time their interiors are so obscured that they can understand nothing at all, and at length become insane from falsities. Consequently with such, all the truths that they have known from the Word and from the doctrine of the church, and have called the truths of their faith, are taken away; and they imbibe in their place every falsity that is in accord with the evil of their life. For they are all let down into their loves and into the falsities agreeing with them; and they then hate and abhor and therefore reject truths, because they are repugnant to the falsities of evil in which they are. From all my experience in what pertains to heaven and hell I can bear witness that all those who from their doctrine have professed faith alone, and whose life has been evil, are in hell.
