Man After Death Is Such as His Life Had Been in the World

(1) 죽은 뒤에 사람은 자기의 사랑, 즉 자기의 의지이다. Man after death is his own love or his own will.

이것은 다방면의 경험으로 내게 입증되었다. 천국 전체는 사랑에서 나온 선의 차이에 따라 공동체들로 구분되어 있다. 영들은 천국으로 올라가 천사가 되면 각자의 사랑이 속해 있는 공동체로 들어가게 된다. 그곳에 들어가면 마치 고향과 생각에 온 것 같다. 천사들은 이것을 느끼고, 거기서 자기와 동질인 사람들과 함께 있게 된다. 만일 거기서 떠나 다른 곳으로 가면 계속 일종의 거부감을 느끼고 자기와 같은 사람들, 즉 자기 주된 사랑으로 돌아가고 싶어 한다. 이것이 천국에서 사람들이 모이는 원리다. 지옥에서도 마찬가지로 천국 사랑에 반대되는 그들의 사랑에 따라 모인다. 앞에서 살펴보았듯이(41–50항, 200–212항) 천국과 지옥은 둘 다 공동체들로 구성되어 있고, 공동체들은 모두 사랑의 차이에 따라 구분되어 있다. This has been proved to me by manifold experience. The entire heaven is divided into societies according to differences of good of love; and every spirit who is taken up into heaven and becomes an angel is taken to the society where his love is; and when he arrives there he is, as it were, at home, and in the house where he was born; this the angel perceives, and is affiliated with those there that are like himself. When he goes away to another place he feels constantly a kind of resistance, and a longing to return to his like, thus to his ruling love. Thus are affiliations brought about in heaven; and in a like manner in hell, where all are affiliated in accordance with loves that are the opposites of heavenly loves. It has been shown above (n. 41–50 and 200–212) that both heaven and hell are composed of societies, and that they are all distinguished according to differences of love.

 

[2] 사람은 죽은 뒤에 그 자신의 사랑이라는 것을 보여 주는 또 다른 사실은, 사람의 주된 사랑과 하나 되지 않는 것은 사후에 그에게서 분리되는 것이, 마치 그에게서 빼앗는 것 같이 보인다는 점이다. 선한 영에게서는 모든 불일치하고 부조화한 것이 빼앗기듯 분리되고, 그는 그 자신의 사랑 안으로 들어가게 된다. 악한 영도 이와 마차가지인데, 다만 악한 영은 진리를, 선한 영은 허위를 빼앗긴다. 이것이 그가 자신의 사랑이 될 때까지 계속된다. 이것은 영인이 셋째 상태에 들어가면 일어나는 일인데, 이에 대해서는 후에 따로 설명하겠다. 이 과정이 끝나면 그는 어느 쪽을 향하든지 계속 그 얼굴을 자기의 중심 사랑으로 돌려 그것이 눈앞에 오게 한다(123, 124항). That man after death is his own love might also be seen from the fact that whatever does not make one with his ruling love is then separated and as it were taken away from him. From one who is good everything discordant or inharmonious is separated and as it were taken away, and he is thus let into his own love. It is the same with an evil spirit, with the difference that from the evil truths are taken away, and from the good falsities are taken away, and this goes on until each becomes his own love. This is effected when the man-spirit is brought into the third state, which will be described hereafter. When this has been done he turns his face constantly to his own love, and this he has continually before his eyes, in whatever direction he turns (see above, n. 123, 124).

 

[3] 모든 영은 자기의 주된 사랑 안에 있으면 그 사랑이 이끄는 대로 끌려간다. 영들은 자기가 끌려간다는 것을 아무리 또렷이 알고 있고, 아무리 거부해야겠다고 생각해도 거기 저항하지 못한다. 영들은 가끔 주된 사랑에 어긋나는 무엇을 해 보려고 시도했지만 소용없었다. 그들의 사랑은 사슬이나 밧줄처럼 그들을 둘러 묶고 있어서 그들은 그것에 의해 끌려다니고 거기서 빠져나올 수 없다. 이 세상 사람들도 마찬가지다. 자기의 사랑이 자신을 이끄는 것이며, 또 자기의 사랑에 의해 다른 사람에게 이끌리는 것이다. 그러나 사람이 영이 되면 이것이 더 심해진다. 그때는 자신의 사랑이 아닌 다른 사랑을 가장하거나 표현하는 것이 불가능해지기 때문이다. All spirits, provided they are kept in their ruling love, can be led wherever one pleases, and are incapable of resistance, however clearly they may see that this is being done, and however much they may think that they will resist. They have often been permitted to try whether they could do anything contrary to their ruling love, but in vain. Their love is like a bond or a rope tied around them, by which they may be led and from which they cannot loose themselves. It is the same with men in the world who are also led by their love, or are led by others by means of their love; but this is more the case when they have become spirits, because they are not then permitted to make a display of any other love, or to counterfeit what is not their own.

 

[4] 사람의 영이 그의 주된 사랑이라는 것은, 내세에서의 모든 대인관계를 보면 분명히 알 수 있다. 누가 상대의 사랑과 조화되는 말과 행동을 하는 한, 그 상대는 그만큼 온전하고, 기쁘고, 생기 있는 얼굴로 확실하게 보인다. 그러나 누가 상대의 주된 사랑과 반대되는 말과 행동을 하면, 그 상대의 얼굴은 변하기 시작해 점점 희미해지고, 잘 보이지 않게 되며, 결국 거기 없는 것처럼 모습이 사라진다. 이런 일은 세상에서는 있을 수 없는 일이라서 나는 자주 놀랐다. 그러나 우리 안의 영에게도 똑같은 일이 일어난다는 것이었다. 우리가 상대에게서 주의를 딴 데로 돌리면, 상대는 더 이상 우리 안중에 없는 것이다. All interaction in the other life proves that the spirit of man is his ruling love, for so far as anyone is acting or speaking in accord with the love of another, to the same extent is the other plainly present, with full, joyous, and lively countenance; but when one is speaking or acting contrary to another’s love, to that extent the other’s countenance begins to be changed, to be obscured and indiscernible, until at length he wholly disappears as if he had not been there. I have often wondered how this could be, for nothing of the kind can occur in the world; but I have been told that it is the same with the spirit in man, which when it turns itself away from another ceases to be within his view.

 

[5] 영이 그 자신의 주된 사랑이라는 또 하나의 증거는, 모든 영은 자신의 사랑에 조화되는 것은 모두 붙들어 자기 것이 되게 하지만, 조화되지 않는 것은 모두 거부하고 저항한다는 사실이다. 사람의 사랑은 해면질의 관다발을 가진 나무처럼 성장을 돕는 액체는 흡수하고, 그 외의 것은 거부한다. 그것은 또 합당한 먹이를 알고, 자기 체질에 맞는 것을 찾아내며, 맞지 않는 것은 피하는 모든 종류의 동물과 같다. 모든 사랑은 자기에게 합당한 것으로, 즉 악한 사랑은 거짓들로, 선한 사랑은 진리들로 자양 되기를 원하기 때문이다. 나는 때로 악한 영들에게 진리와 선을 가르치려고 하는 단순한 선한 영들을 보게 된 적이 있었다. 악한 영들은 가르침을 대하자 멀리 달아났고, 자기와 동질의 영들과 합류하자 자신의 사랑과 일치하는 모든 허위를 큰 기쁨으로 붙들었다.나는 또 선한 영들이 진리에 대해 서로 얘기를 나누는 것도 보게 된 적이 있는데, 거기 있는 다른 선한 영들은 열심히 듣고 있었으나, 거기 있는 악한 영들은 아무 소리도 들리지 않는 듯 전혀 주의를 기울이지 않았다. 중간 영계에서는 어떤 길들은 천국으로, 어떤 길들은 지옥으로 이어져 있고, 각각의 길은 특정한 공동체로 이어져 있는 것이 보인다. 선한 영들은 천국과 자신의 사랑의 선이 속해 있는 천국 공동체로 가는 길만 걷는다. 그들에게는 다른 곳으로 가는 길은 보이지 않는다. 악한 영들은 지옥으로 가는 길, 자신의 사랑의 악이 속해 있는 지옥 사회로 가는 길만 걷고, 다른 곳으로 가는 길은 그들에게 보이지 않는다. 만일 다른 길이 보여도 전혀 그리로 가려고 하지 않는다. 영계에서는 이 길들은 여러 진리나 허위에 상응하는 실제적 외관이다. 이런 이유로 말씀에 나오는 길은 이와 같은 뜻을 갖는다.주270 이러한 경험적 증거로 앞에서 이성을 바탕으로 증명한 것이 더 확실해졌을 것이다. 즉 모든 사람은 죽은 뒤 그 자신의 사랑이자 자신의 의지하는 것이다. 여기서 자신의 의지라고 한 것은 사람의 의지는 그의 사랑이기 때문이다. Another proof that a spirit is his ruling love is that every spirit seizes and appropriates all things that are in harmony with his love, and rejects and repudiates all that are not. Everyone’s love is like a spongy or porous wood, which imbibes such fluids as promote its growth, and repels others. It is also like animals of every kind, which know their proper food and seek the things that agree with their nature, and avoid what disagrees; for every love wishes to be nourished on what belongs to it, evil love by falsities and good love by truths. I have sometimes been permitted to see certain simple good spirits desiring to instruct the evil in truths and goods; but when the instruction was offered them they fled far away, and when they came to their own they seized with great pleasure upon the falsities that were in agreement with their love. I have also seen good spirits talking together about truths, and the good who were present listened eagerly to the conversation, but the evil who were present paid no attention to it, as if they did not hear it. In the world of spirits ways are seen, some leading to heaven, some to hell, and each to some particular society. Good spirits go only in the ways that lead to heaven, and to the society there that is in the good of their love; and do not see the ways that lead elsewhere; while evil spirits go only in the ways that lead to hell, and to the society there that is in the evil of their love; and do not see the ways that lead elsewhere; or if they see them have no wish to enter them. In the spiritual world these ways are real appearances, which correspond to truths or falsities; and this is why ways have this signification in the Word.270 By this evidence from experience what has previously been affirmed on the ground of reason is made more certain, namely, that every man after death is his own love and his own will. It is said one’s own will because everyone’s will is his love.

 

 

주270. ‘방법’, ‘길’, ‘도로’, ‘거리’ 및 ‘넓은 거리’는 선으로 인도하는 진리나 악으로 이끄는 거짓을 의미한다 (AC.627, 2333, 10422). A “way,” a “path,” a “road,” a “street,” and a “broad street,” signify truths leading to good, or falsities leading to evil (n. 627, 2333, 10422). ‘길을 닦다’ 혹은 ‘길을 예비하다’는 진리를 수용하기 위해 준비하는 걸 말한다(AC.3142). “To sweep [or prepare] a way” means to prepare for the reception of truths (n. 3142). ‘길을 알게 하는 것’은 주님과 관련, 선으로 인도하는 진리 안에서 가르치는 걸 의미한다(AC.10565). “To make known the way” means, in respect to the Lord, to instruct in truths that lead to good (n. 10565).
