사후 사람은 모든 감각과 그가 생전에 가졌던 모든 기억, 사고 및 애정을 그대로 가지고 있다. 그가 사용했던 육체 밖에는 남기고 가는 게 없다

영들과 천사들도 사람과 똑같이 기억 능력이 있다. 그들이 듣고, 보고, 생각하고, 바라고, 행동하는 모든 것이 기억에 남아 있으며, 그로 인해 합리적 기능이 영원히 계속 발달된다. 따라서 영들과 천사들은 사람과 마찬가지로 선과 진리에 대한 지식으로 지성과 지혜가 완전해져 간다. 허락하심 하에 나는 영들과 천사들에게 기억 능력이 있음을 많은 경험으로 알게 되었다. 나는 그들이 남들 앞에서나 혼자 있을 때 생각하고 행한 모든 것이 다른 영들과 함께 있을 때 기억에서 나와 발표되는 것을 보았다. 또 단순한 선함에서 나온 진리를 지닌 사람들이 지식을 흡수하고 그에 따라 지성적이 되어 나중에 천국으로 올라가는 것을 보았다. 그러나 여기서 알아두어야 할 점은, 그들은 이 세상에서 갖춘 선과 진리에 대한 애정의 정도를 넘어서 지성적이 될 수는 없다는 것이다. 모든 영과 천사는 이 세상에서 지녔던 만큼의 애정을 지니고 있는데, 이 애정은 갈수록 더 완벽해지고 더 채워진다. 이 과정이 영원히 계속되는 것이다. 모든 것이 영원히 더 채워질 수 있는 이유는, 모든 것이 무한히 다양해지고, 그에 따라 다양한 요소로 풍부해질 수 있으며, 그 결과 증식하고 결실할 수 있기 때문이다. 선은 무한자로부터 오는 것이므로 한계가 없다. 영들과 천사들의 지성과 지혜는 선과 진리에 대한 지식으로 끊임없이 더 완벽해진다는 것은 천사들의 지혜를 다룬 곳(265–275항)과 천국에 있는 비기독교인, 즉 교회 밖의 사람들을 다룬 곳(318–328항), 그리고 천국의 어린아이들에 대해서 다룬 곳(329–345항)에 나와 있다. 또 이것은 그들이 이 세상에서 지녔던 선과 진리에 대한 애정의 정도만큼만 이루어지고 그것을 넘지 않는다는 것은 349항에 나와 있다. Spirits and angels, equally with men, have a memory, whatever they hear, see, think, will, and do, remaining with them, and thereby their rational faculty is continually cultivated even to eternity. Thus spirits and angels, equally with men, are perfected in intelligence and wisdom by means of knowledges of truth and good. That spirits and angels have a memory I have been permitted to learn by much experience, having seen everything that they have thought and done, both in public and in private, called forth from their memories when they were with other spirits; and I have seen those that were in some truth from simple good imbued with knowledges, and thereby with intelligence, and afterwards raised up into heaven. But it must be understood that such are not imbued with knowledges and thereby with intelligence beyond the degree of affection for good and for truth that they have attained to while in the world; for such and so much of affection as any spirit or angel had in the world remains with him; and this affection is afterwards perfected by being filled out, which goes on to eternity. For everything is capable of being filled out to eternity, since everything is capable of infinite variation, thus of enrichment by various things, and consequently of multiplication and fructification. To anything good there is no limit because it is from the Infinite. That spirits and angels are being perfected unceasingly in intelligence and wisdom by means of knowledges of truth and good may be seen above, in the chapters on the wisdom of the angels of heaven (n. 265–275); on the heathen or people outside the church in heaven (n. 318–328); and on little children in heaven (n. 329–345); and that this is done to that degree of affection for good and for truth in which they had been in the world, and not beyond it, may be seen in n. 349.
