사후 사람은 모든 감각과 그가 생전에 가졌던 모든 기억, 사고 및 애정을 그대로 가지고 있다. 그가 사용했던 육체 밖에는 남기고 가는 게 없다

사람이 세상에 살 때, 주님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하면 천사들의 지성과 지혜가 따르고, 그 사람 안에 담긴다. 그렇지만 그것은 내적 기억 능력의 가장 깊은 곳에 저장되어 있어서 육신을 벗기 전까지는 전혀 의식되지 않는다. 육신을 벗으면 자연적 기억 능력이 휴면 상태가 되고, 내적 기억 능력이 활성화되어 점차적으로 천사들과 똑같은 기억 능력이 된다. Men living in the world who are in love to the Lord and charity toward the neighbor have with them and in them angelic intelligence and wisdom, but it is then stored up in the inmosts of the inner memory; and they are not at all conscious of it until they put off corporeal things. Then the natural memory is laid asleep and they awake into their inner memory, and then gradually into angelic memory itself.
