사후 사람은 모든 감각과 그가 생전에 가졌던 모든 기억, 사고 및 애정을 그대로 가지고 있다. 그가 사용했던 육체 밖에는 남기고 가는 게 없다

어떤 영은 몸을 입고 살 때 알고 있었던 많은 것을 기억할 수 없게 되자 자기가 그렇게도 좋아했던 지식의 즐거움을 잃어버렸다고 분개했다. 그러나 누군가 그에게 말해주었다. 그대가 잃어버린 것은 하나도 없다. 전에 알고 있던 모든 것을 그대는 여전히 알고 있다. 그러나 지금 그대가 와있는 세계에서는 아무도 그런 것을 기억해 낼 수 없게 되어 있다. 오히려 그대는 지금 만족해야 하는 것이, 전보다 훨씬 완벽하게 생각하고, 말할 수 있기 때문이다. 그대의 합리성은 전처럼 탁하고, 어둡고, 물질적인 육신에 속한 것에 매여 있지 않다. 그런 것은 지금 그대가 와있는 이 나라에서는 쓰일 수 없기 때문이다. 또 그대는 이제 영원한 삶에 유용한 모든 것을 갖추고 있다. 그것을 갖추어야만 기쁘고 행복해질 수 있는 것이다. 그러므로 이 나라에 들어오면 기억 속의 물질적 요소들이 제거되거나 휴면 상태에 들어감으로 해서 사고력이 없어진다고 믿는 것은 잘 모르고 하는 생각이다. 참된 사실을 말하자면, 사람의 외적 차원, 즉 육체에 속한 감각의 차원에서 떠나는 만큼 사람은 천국의 차원, 영적 차원으로 올라갈 수 있는 것이다. A certain spirit was indignant because he was unable to remember many things that he knew in the life of the body, grieving over the lost pleasure which he had so much enjoyed, but he was told that he had lost nothing at all, that he still knew each and every thing that he had known, although in the world where he now was no one was permitted to call forth such things from the memory, and that he ought to be satisfied that he could now think and speak much better and more perfectly than before, and that his rational was not now immersed as before in gross, obscure, material, and corporeal things, which are of no use in the kingdom into which he had now come; also that he now possessed everything conducive to the uses of eternal life, and that this is the only way of becoming blessed and happy; and therefore it is the part of ignorance to believe that in this kingdom intelligence perishes with the removal or quiescence of the material things in the memory; for the real fact is that so far as the mind can be withdrawn from things of sense pertaining to the external man or the body, so far it is elevated to things spiritual and heavenly.
