사후 사람은 모든 감각과 그가 생전에 가졌던 모든 기억, 사고 및 애정을 그대로 가지고 있다. 그가 사용했던 육체 밖에는 남기고 가는 게 없다

사람이 세상을 떠날 때, 기억 전체를 유지한다는 것을 나는 수많은 경우를 통해 보아왔다. 기록할 만한 많은 것 중 몇 가지를 예로 들어보겠다. 이 세상에서 지은 자기 죄와 악행을 부인하는 영들이 있었다. 따라서 그들이 스스로 결백하다고 믿지 못하도록 그들의 기억에서 생의 초기부터 말년까지의 모든 행위가 차례로 꺼내져 재현되었는데, 주로 간음과 음탕한 행위들이었다. That when a man leaves the world he takes with him all his memory has been shown to me in many ways, and many of the things I have seen and heard are worthy of mention, some of which I will relate in order. There were some who denied their crimes and villainies which they had perpetrated in the world; and in consequence, that they might not be believed innocent, all their deeds were disclosed and reviewed from their memory in order, from their earliest to their latest years; these were chiefly adulteries and whoredoms.

 

[2] 악한 기술로 남을 속이고 훔친 사람들도 있었다. 그들의 사기행각과 도둑질도 연달아 모두 드러났는데 그중 많은 것은 세상에서 자기 혼자만 알고 있던 것들이었다. 그들은 그것을 고백해야 했다. 그 당시 그들 마음속에 뒤섞여 있던 모든 생각, 의도, 즐거움과 두려움까지 낱낱이 백일하에 드러났기 때문이다. There were some who had deceived others by wicked arts and had committed thefts. The deceits and thefts of these were also enumerated in detail, many of which were known to scarcely any in the world except themselves. These deeds they confessed, because they were plainly set forth, with every thought, intention, pleasure, and fear which occupied their minds at the time.

 

[3] 재판에 관련해 뇌물을 받고 돈을 번 사람들도 있었다. 그들도 마찬가지로 자신의 기억으로 조사받았고, 처음 직책을 맡은 때부터 그만둔 날까지의 모든 것이 드러났다. 자세한 뇌물의 액수와 가치, 받은 일시, 당시 그들의 마음 상태와 의도까지 수백 가지가 떠올라 눈앞에 상영되었다. 어떤 경우에는 놀랍게도 그들이 그런 행위를 기록해 둔 수첩까지 한장 한장 펼쳐져 읽힌다. There were others who had accepted bribes, and had rendered venal judgments, who were similarly explored from their memory and from it everything they had done from the beginning to the end of their office was reviewed. Every detail in regard to what and how much they had received, as well as the time, and their state of mind and intention, were brought to their recollection and made visibly clear to the number of many hundreds. This was done with several and what is wonderful, in some cases their memorandum books, in which they had recorded these things, were opened and read before them page by page.

 

[4] 처녀들을 유혹해 수치스럽게 했거나 순결을 빼앗은 사람들도 이와 같은 심판을 받는다. 그들의 기억으로부터 범행이 자세하게 떠오르고 재현된다. 처녀들과 여자들의 얼굴, 장소, 그때 했던 말들과 의도가 실제처럼 나타난다. 이것은 어떤 장면을 눈으로 볼 때처럼 즉각 나타나고, 어떤 때는 그 상연이 몇 시간씩 계속된다. Others who had enticed maidens to shame or had violated chastity were called to a like judgment; and the details of their crimes were drawn forth from their memory and reviewed. The very faces of the maidens and women were also exhibited as if present, with the places, words, and intentions, and this as suddenly as when a scene is presented to the sight, the exhibitions continuing sometimes for hours.

 

[5] 남을 중상하는 것을 가볍게 여긴 사람들이 있었다. 나는 그의 비방과 중상이 그때 사용한 단어들까지 그대로 재연되는 것을 들었다. 세상에서 그가 아주 조심스럽게 감추어 왔음에도, 비방의 대상이 된 사람과 그것을 듣고 있던 사람까지 모든 것이 생생하게 재생되고 상연되었다. There was one who had made light of slandering others; and I heard his slanders recounted in order, and his them page by page. defamations, with the very words, and the persons about whom and before whom they were uttered; all of which were produced and presented to the very life, although while he lived in the world he had most carefully concealed everything.

 

[6] 사기로 친척의 유산을 가로챈 사람이 있었다. 그도 같은 심판을 거쳐 판결을 받았다. 놀랍게도 그들 사이에 오간 서류와 편지가 읽히는 것이 내 귀에 들렸는데, 그것은 한 글자도 빠짐이 없다고 했다. There was one who had deprived a relative of his inheritance under a fraudulent pretext; and he was in like manner convicted and judged; and what is wonderful, the letters and papers that passed between them were read in my hearing, and it was said that not a word was lacking.

 

[7] 바로 그 사람은 죽기 얼마 전에 그의 이웃을 몰래 독살한 사람이었다. 이것이 밝혀진 과정은 이렇다. 그가 발밑에 구덩이를 파고 있는 모습이 나타났다. 그 구덩이에서 한 사람이 마치 무덤에서 나오듯이 나와서 그를 향해 외쳤다. “나에게 무슨 짓을 했는가?” 그러자 그 살인자가 친절하게 말을 거는 모습, 잔을 건네주는 모습, 게다가 그 행위를 하기 전에 그가 한 생각과 그후에 일어난 일까지 모든 것이 드러났다. 그 모든 것이 다 드러나자 그는 지옥을 판결받았다. The same person shortly before his death had also secretly poisoned his neighbor. This was disclosed in this way. He appeared to be digging a trench under his feet, from which a man came forth as out of a grave, and cried out to him, “What have you done to me?” Then everything was revealed, how the poisoner had talked with him in a friendly manner, and had held out the cup, also what he thought beforehand, and what happened afterwards. When all this had been disclosed he was sentenced to hell.

 

[8] 한마디로, 모든 악한 영에게는 그의 모든 악과 범행과 약탈과 사기와 속임수가 다 드러나고, 그의 기억에서 떠올려져 죄과가 충분히 입증된다. 또 모든 상황이 전부 공개되므로 이것을 부인할 여지가 없다. 나는 사람의 기억을 천사가 조사할 때, 그가 한 달 동안 생각한 것이 하루하루 일어난 그대로 하나도 틀림없이 되살려지는 것도 보았다. In a word, to each evil spirit all his evils, villainies, robberies, artifices, and deceits are made clear, and are brought forth from his very memory, and his guilt is fully established; nor is there any possible room for denial, because all the circumstances are exhibited together. Moreover, I have learned from a man’s memory, when it was seen and inspected by angels, what his thoughts had been for a month, one day after another, and this without mistake, the thoughts being recalled just as they arose from day to day.

 

[9] 이상의 사례들로 사람은 자기의 기억을 전부 가지고 간다는 것과, 사후에 만인 앞에 드러나지 못하게 감출 수 있는 것은 이 세상에 아무 것도 없음을 알 수 있을 것이다. 다음 주의 말씀도 그것을 의미한다. From these examples it can be seen that man carries with him all of his memory, and that nothing can be so concealed in the world as not to be disclosed after death, which is done in the presence of many, according to the Lord’s words:

 

2감추인 것이 드러나지 않을 것이 없고 숨긴 것이 알려지지 않을 것이 없나니 3이러므로 너희가 어두운 데서 말한 모든 것이 광명한 데서 들리고 너희가 골방에서 귀에 대고 말한 것이 지붕 위에서 전파되리라 (눅12:2, 3) There is nothing concealed that shall not be uncovered, and nothing secret that shall not be known; therefore what ye have spoken in the dark shall be heard in the light and what ye have spoken in the ear shall be proclaimed on the housetops (Luke 12:2, 3).
