사후 사람은 모든 감각과 그가 생전에 가졌던 모든 기억, 사고 및 애정을 그대로 가지고 있다. 그가 사용했던 육체 밖에는 남기고 가는 게 없다

사람은 죽어서 자연계에서 영계로 갈 때, 육신을 제외하고는 자기의 모든 것, 즉 사람을 이루고 있는 모든 것을 가지고 간다는 것은, 다방면의 경험으로 내게 입증된 사실이다. 사람이 영계, 즉 사후 생활에 들어가면, 이 세상에서처럼 몸을 입고 있고 전과 다른 점을 전혀 찾을 수 없는, 똑같은 상태에 있다. 그러나 그때의 몸은 영적인 몸이고, 따라서 이 땅의 차원을 벗어난 정화된 몸이다. 영적인 것이 영적인 것을 보거나 만지는 것은, 자연적인 것이 자연적인 것을 보거나 만지는 것과 똑같다. 그러므로 사람이 영이 되면, 이 세상에서 가졌던 그 몸 안에 있다고만 여기고, 따라서 자기가 죽었다는 것을 모른다. It has been proved to me by manifold experience that when man passes from the natural world into the spiritual, as he does when he dies, he carries with him all his possessions, that is, everything that belongs to him as a man, except his earthly body. For when man enters the spiritual world or the life after death, he is in a body as he was in the world, with no apparent difference, since he neither sees nor feels any difference. But his body is then spiritual, and thus separated or purified from all that is earthly; and when what is spiritual touches or sees what is spiritual, it is just the same as when what is natural touches or sees what is natural. So when a man has become a spirit he does not know otherwise than that he is in the same body that he had in the world and thus does not know that he has died.

 

[2] 게다가 영인은 세상에서 사용하던 내적, 외적 모든 감각을 사용한다. 전처럼 보고, 듣고 말하고, 냄새 맡고 맛보며, 만지는 것의 촉감을 느낀다. 또한 전처럼 바라고, 원하고, 갈망하며, 생각하고, 성찰하고, 감동하고, 사랑하고, 뜻한다. 학문을 사랑한 사람들은 전처럼 독서하고 저술한다. 한마디로, 사람이 이 삶에서 저 삶으로, 즉 이 세상에서 저 세상으로 가는 것은 한 장소에서 다른 곳으로 옮기는 것과 같다. 이때 사람으로서 지니고 있던 모든 것을 그대로 가지고 가는 것이다. 따라서 죽음은 단순히 세상 육신의 죽음일 뿐이므로 그가 지닌 것을 죽음으로 인해서 하나라도 잃었다고 할 수 없다. Moreover, a man’s spirit enjoys every sense, both outer and inner, that he enjoyed in the world; he sees as before, he hears and speaks as before, smells and tastes, and when touched, he feels the touch as before; he also longs, desires, craves, thinks, reflects, is stirred, loves, wills, as before; and one who takes delight in studies, reads and writes as before. In a word, when a man passes from one life into the other, or from one world into the other, it is like passing from one place into another, carrying with him all things that he had possessed in himself as a man; so that by death, which is only the death of the earthly body, man cannot be said to have lost anything really his own.

 

[3] 나아가서 사람은 유아기부터 세상을 마칠 때까지 이 세상에서 듣고, 보고, 읽고, 배우고, 생각한 모든 것이 담겨 있는 그의 자연적 기억을 가지고 간다. 그러나 그 기억의 내용들은 영계에서 재생될 수 없으므로 묻힌 기억처럼 휴면 상태에 있다. 그렇지만 주께서 원하실 때는 재생될 수 있다. 이 기억과 그 사후의 상태에 대해서는 나중에 더 설명하겠다. 감각적인 사람은 사람이 죽은 뒤에 이런 상태에 있다는 것을 이해하지 못하므로 믿지 못한다. 감각적인 사람은 영적인 사실들도 자연적으로 생각할 수밖에 없기 때문에, 그들의 감각의 대상, 즉 육안으로 보이고 손에 만져지는 것(요20:25, 27, 29에 나오는 도마의 경우처럼)이 아니면 그 존재를 부인하기 때문이다. 감각적인 사람에 대해서는 267항에서 설명했다. Furthermore, he carries with him his natural memory, retaining everything that he has heard, seen, read, learned, or thought, in the world from earliest infancy even to the end of life; although the natural objects that are contained in the memory, since they cannot be reproduced in the spiritual world, are quiescent, just as they are when one is not thinking of them. Nevertheless, they are reproduced when the Lord so wills. But more will be said presently about this memory and its state after death. A sensual man finds it impossible to believe that such is the state of man after death, because he cannot comprehend it; for a sensual man must needs think naturally even about spiritual things; therefore, anything that does not appeal to his senses, that is, that he does not see with his bodily eyes and touch with his hands (as is said of Thomas in John 20:25, 27, 29) he denies the existence of.
