위선자들은 얼굴이 다른 이들보다 더 느리게 변화한다. 그들은 선한 애정처럼 보이도록 내면을 조절하는 것이 습관이 되어있기 때문이다. 따라서 그들은 오랫동안 흉하지 않은 외관을 유지한다. 그러나 그들이 가장하고 있던 것이 벗겨지고, 그들 마음의 내면성이 드러나 그들 자신의 애정의 모습과 일치되면, 그들은 나중에 다른 사람들보다 더 흉한 모습이 된다. 위선자들은 천사처럼 말하는 데 익숙하지만, 내적으로는 신을 부인하고 자연만 시인하였으며, 따라서 천국과 교회에 속한 것을 부인한 사람들이다. The faces of hypocrites are changed more slowly than those of others, because by practice they had formed a habit of so managing their interiors as to imitate good affections; consequently for a long time they appear not unbeautiful. But as that which they had assumed is gradually put off, and the interiors of the mind are brought into accord with the form of their affections, they become after a while more misshapen than others. Hypocrites are such as have been accustomed to talk like angels, but interiorly have acknowledged nature alone and not the Divine, and have therefore denied what pertains to heaven and the church.
