사람은 사후에도 완전한 사람의 형태로 있다

우리가 알아야 할 것은 사람의 사후 모습은 그가 내적으로 신적 진리를 사랑하고, 그 진리에 따라 산 정도만큼 더 아름답다는 점이다. 사람의 내면은 그의 사랑과 생활에 따라 열리고 형성되기 때문이다. 그러므로 그의 애정이 더 내적일수록 더 천국같이 되고, 따라서 그 얼굴도 더 아름다운 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 가장 내적인 천국의 천사들이 가장 아름다운 것이다. 그들은 천적 사랑의 모습인 것이다. 반면 신적 진리를 더 외적으로 사랑했고, 따라서 그 진리에 따라 사는 방법도 더 외적이었던 사람들은 아름다움이 덜하다. 외적인 애정은 그들의 얼굴에서만 빛나고, 거기에는 천국의 내적인 사랑이 비쳐나지 않으므로 천국의 본질적인 형태가 전혀 없다. 그런 사람들의 얼굴은 비교적 어둡고, 내적 삶에서 비쳐나는 생기가 없다. 한마디로, 모든 완전성은 내적으로 갈수록 증가하고, 외적으로 갈수록 감소하며, 완전성에 따라 아름다움도 증감한다. 나는 삼층천 천사들의 눈부신 얼굴을 본 적이 있다. 그것은 어떤 화가의 재능을 다해도 그런 빛의 천분의 일도 물감으로 표현할 수 없을 만큼 광채와 생명력을 발하는 얼굴이었다. 그러나 가장 낮은 천국 천사들의 얼굴은 어느 정도 표현할 수 있을 것이다. It should be known that everyone’s human form after death is the more beautiful in proportion as he has more interiorly loved Divine truths and lived according to them; for everyone’s interiors are opened and formed in accordance with his love and life; therefore the more interior the affection is the more like heaven it is, and in consequence the more beautiful the face is. This is why the angels in the inmost heaven are the most beautiful, for they are forms of celestial love. But those that have loved Divine truths more exteriorly, and thus have lived in accordance with them in a more external way, are less beautiful; for exterior affections only shine forth from their faces; and through these no interior heavenly love shines, consequently nothing of the form of heaven as it is in itself. There is seen in the faces of such something comparatively obscure, not vivified by anything of interior life shining through it. In a word, all perfection increases toward interiors and decreases toward exteriors, and as perfection increases and decreases so does beauty. I have seen angelic faces of the third heaven of such radiance that no painter with all his art could possibly give any such light to his colors as to equal a thousandth part of the brightness and life that shone forth from their countenances. But the faces of the angels of the lowest heaven may in some measure be equaled.
