자기 내면에 관하여 모든 사람은 영이다

먼저, 몸을 떠나는 것은 이렇다. 사람은 자는 것과 깨어 있는 것의 중간 상태로 들어간다. 이 상태에서도 그 자신은 완전히 깨어 있다고 느낀다. 모든 감각은 시각과 청각뿐 아니라 신기하게도 촉각에 이르는 몸의 감각까지 완전히 깨어 있는데, 이는 몸이 깨어 있을 때보다 훨씬 더 예민한 감각이다. 사람들이 몸의 개입이 거의 없이 영들과 천사들을 생생히 보고 듣고 만지기까지 했던 것도 이 상태에서다. 이것이 몸에서 떠난다고 하는 상태이고, 몸 안에 있었는지 밖에 있었는지 모른다고 하는 상태이다. 나에게는 이런 상태에 들어가는 경험이 서너 번 주어졌다. 오직 그 상태가 어떤 것인지 배우고, 영들과 천사들이 모든 감각을 향유하며, 사람도 몸을 떠난 후, 그의 영이 모든 감각을 향유한다는 것을 배우게 하기 위해서였다. First, as to withdrawal from the body, it happens thus. Man is brought into a certain state that is midway between sleeping and waking, and when in that state he seems to himself to be wide awake; all the senses are as perfectly awake as in the completest bodily wakefulness, not only the sight and the hearing, but what is wonderful, the sense of touch also, which is then more exquisite than is ever possible when the body is awake. In this state spirits and angels have been seen to the very life, and have been heard, and what is wonderful, have been touched, with almost nothing of the body intervening. This is the state that is called being withdrawn from the body, and not knowing whether one is in the body or out of it. I have been admitted into this state only three or four times, that I might learn what it is, and might know that spirits and angels enjoy every sense, and that man does also in respect to his spirit when he is withdrawn from the body.
