자기 내면에 관하여 모든 사람은 영이다

영들이 다른 곳으로 데려간다는 것이 무엇이고, 어떻게 이루어지는지를 나는 겨우 두어 번이긴 하지만 직접 체험함으로써 알 수 있었다. 그중 한 가지 경험을 말해보겠다. 나는 도시의 거리와 교외를 걸으면서 영들과 대화를 나누었는데, 그때 나는 평소와 다름없이 온전히 깨어 있었고, 온전한 시각으로 길을 잃지 않고 걸으면서 숲과 강과 저택과 집들과 사람들 등을 또렷이 보고 있었다. 이렇게 몇 시간가량 걸은 후, 나는 갑자기 다시 육안으로 보게 되었고 내가 다른 곳에 있다는 것을 알고 크게 놀랐다. 그리고 내가 이른바 ‘영들에 의해 다른 곳에 옮겨가는’ 상태에 있었음을 깨달았다. 그 상태가 계속되는 동안은 내가 몇 십리를 걸었더라도 거리를 의식하지 못하고, 몇 시간 또는 며칠이 걸렸어도 시간을 의식하지 못하며, 또 피곤도 느끼지 못한다. 그렇게 자기도 모르는 길을 목적지까지 가게 된다. As to being carried away by the spirit to another place, I have been shown by living experience what it is, and how it is done, but only two or three times. I will relate a single instance. Walking through the streets of a city and through fields, talking at the same time with spirits, I knew no otherwise than that I was fully awake, and in possession of my usual sight. Thus I walked on without going astray, and all the while with clear vision, seeing groves, rivers, palaces, houses, men, and other objects. But after walking thus for some hours, suddenly I saw with my bodily eyes, and noted that I was in another place. Being greatly astonished I perceived that I had been in the same state as those who were said to have been led away by the spirit into another place. For in this state the distance, even though it be many miles, and the time, though it be many hours or days, are not thought of; neither is there any feeling of fatigue; and one is led unerringly through ways of which he himself is ignorant, even to the destined place.
