중간 영계는 천국도 아니고 지옥도 아닌, 그 사이의 지역, 즉 상태다. 사람이 죽으면 가장 먼저 도착하는 곳이 이곳이다. 여기서 필요한 만큼 머물고 난 후, 그 사람이 이 세상에서 어떻게 살았는가에 따라서 천국으로 올라가거나 지옥에 던져진다. The world of spirits is not heaven, nor is it hell, but it is the intermediate place or state between the two; for it is the place that man first enters after death; and from which after a suitable time he is either raised up into heaven or cast down into hell in accord with his life in the world.
