천국의 기쁨과 행복

천국 사람들은 끊임없이 삶의 청춘을 향해 나아간다. 수천 년 더 살수록 그만큼 더 기쁘고 행복한 청춘이 된다. 이것이 그들의 사랑과 이웃 사랑과 신앙의 성장 정도에 맞추어 영원히 더해 간다. 나이 들어 늙고 쇠약해져 세상을 뜬 여성들도, 만일 그들이 주님을 믿고 이웃을 사랑하며, 한 남편과 행복한 결혼애 안에 살았으면, 천국에서 세월이 갈수록 꽃다운 젊음과 청년 초기로 변하고, 이 세상에서 볼 수 있는 모든 미의 개념을 초월하는 아름다움을 더해 간다. 그들의 선함과 이웃 사랑이 그런 모습을 나타내고, 그 자체의 형상을 이루는 것이다. 그들 얼굴의 미세한 부분에서까지 이웃 사랑의 기쁨과 아름다움이 빛처럼 뿜어 나오며, 그들은 이웃 사랑의 모습 그 자체이다. 이 모습을 본 어떤 이들은 너무 감탄하여 충격을 느끼기도 했다. 천국에서 보이는 이웃 사랑의 모습은 살아 있는 형상이며, 이웃 사랑이 그 형상을 만드는 주체인 동시에 바로 그 만들어진 형상이다. 그렇기 때문에 천사는 전신이 이웃 사랑이라 할 수 있고, 특히 얼굴이 그렇다. 이것은 분명하게 보고 느낄 수 있는 모습이다. 그 모습을 눈으로 보면 도저히 말로 할 수 없는 아름다움이 마음의 가장 깊은 내부를 이웃 사랑으로 감화한다. 한마디로 천국에서 나이 든다는 것은 젊어지는 것이다. 주님을 사랑하고 이웃을 사랑하며 산 사람은 저세상에 가면 확실히 그런 아름다운 모습으로 변한다. 천국을 이루고 있는 천사들은 모두 그런 모습이며, 그 모습이 한없이 다양하다. Those that are in heaven are continually advancing toward the spring of life, with a greater advance toward a more joyful and happy spring the more thousands of years they live; and this to eternity, with increase according to the growth and degree of their love, charity, and faith. Women who have died old and worn out with age, if they have lived in faith in the Lord, in charity to the neighbor, and in happy marriage love with a husband, advance with the succession of years more and more into the flower of youth and early womanhood, and into a beauty that transcends every conception of any such beauty as is seen on the earth. Goodness and charity are what give this form and thus manifest their own likeness, causing the joy and beauty of charity to shine forth from every least particular of the face, and causing them to be the very forms of charity. Some who beheld this were struck with amazement. The form of charity that is seen in a living way in heaven, is such that it is charity itself that both forms and is formed; and this in such a manner that the whole angel is a charity, as it were, especially the face; and this is both clearly seen and felt. When this form is beheld it is beauty unspeakable, affecting with charity the very inmost life of the mind. In a word, to grow old in heaven is to grow young. Such forms or such beauties do those become in the other life who have lived in love to the Lord and in charity toward the neighbor. All angels are such forms in endless variety; and of these heaven is constituted.
