천국의 기쁨과 행복

어떤 영들이 천국의 기쁨이 어떤 것인지 알고 싶어하면 그들이 감당할 수 있는 최고 단계까지 천국 기쁨을 느껴보게 한다. 그러나 그 기쁨도 아직 천사의 기쁨은 아니며, 천사의 가장 낮은 단계에도 거의 이르기 어렵다. 그것은 거의 차갑다고 할 만큼 극히 미미한 기쁨이었는데도 그 영들은 그것이 가장 천국적이라고 했다. 그들에게는 그것이 최대한의 내적인 기쁨이었기 때문이다. 이것을 보면 천국의 기쁨에 단계가 있다는 사실 뿐 아니라 어떤 이에겐 가장 내적인 기쁨도 다른 이에겐 가장 외적이거나 중간 정도의 기쁨에 겨우 달하는 것임을 알 수 있다. 또 자신에게 가장 내적이 되는 기쁨을 받으면 그는 천국의 기쁨을 누리는 것이며, 그보다 더 내적인 기쁨은 그에게 고통이 되므로 감당할 수 없다는 것도 알 수 있다. When certain spirits wished to know what heavenly joy is they were allowed to feel it to such a degree that they could no longer bear it; and yet it was not angelic joy; it was scarcely in the least degree angelic, as I was permitted to perceive by sharing it, but was so slight as to be almost frigid; nevertheless they called it most heavenly, because to them it was an inmost joy. From this it was evident, not only that there are degrees of the joys of heaven, but also that the inmost joy of one scarcely reaches to the outmost or middle joy of another; also that when anyone receives his own inmost joy he is in his heavenly joy, and cannot endure what is still more interior, for such a joy becomes painful to him.
