천국의 기쁨과 행복

Heavenly Joy and Happiness

천국과 천국의 기쁨이 위대해지는 데 있다고 믿은 영들과 대화한 적이 있었다. 그들에게 나는 이렇게 말했다. ‘천국에서는 가장 낮은 사람이 가장 위대하다. 스스로가 아니라 오직 주님으로부터만 능력과 지혜를 받고 받기 원하는 사람을 가장 낮은 사람이라고 하기 때문에, 그런 의미에서 가장 낮은 사람이 가장 행복한 사람이다. 그리고 가장 행복한 사람이 가장 위대한 사람이다. 그가 주님으로부터 받은 모든 능력과 지혜로 뛰어나기 때문이다. 가장 행복하지 않다면 가장 위대하다는 것이 무슨 의미가 있겠는가? 권력자가 권력을 통해서, 부자가 부를 통해서 추구하는 것이 가장 행복해지는 것이 아닌가?’ 이어서 나는 말했다. ‘천국은 위대해지려는 목적으로 자신을 낮추는 데도 있지 않다. 그것은 결국 위대해지려는 의도와 갈망이기 때문이다. 천국은 진심으로 다른 사람의 유익을 자신의 유익보다 더 바라는 데 있고, 또 보상을 목적으로 하지 않고, 오직 사랑으로 다른 사람들의 행복을 위해 그들을 섬기는 데 있다.’ I have talked with spirits who believed heaven and heavenly joy to consist in their being great; but such were told that in heaven he that is least is greatest, since he is called least who has, and wishes to have, no power or wisdom from himself, but only from the Lord, he that is least in that sense having the greatest happiness, and as he has the greatest happiness, it follows that he is greatest; for he has thereby from the Lord all power and excels all in wisdom. What is it to be the greatest unless to be the most happy? For to be the most happy is what the powerful seek through power and the rich through riches. It was further said that heaven does not consist in a desire to be least for the purpose of being greatest, for that would be aspiring and longing to be the greatest; but it consists in desiring from the heart the good of others more than one’s own, and in serving others with a view to their happiness, not with recompense as an end, but from love.
