천국의 결혼

어떤 사람들에게는 결혼애처럼 보이는 것이 있다. 그러나 그들이 선과 진리에 대한 사랑 안에 거하기 전까지는 결혼애가 있을 수 없고, 단지 여러 가지 이유에서 결혼애처럼 보이는 것을 지니고 있을 뿐이다. 그 이유들이란, 가정에서 좋은 대접을 받기 위해서, 걱정 없이 평안하고 편하게 살기 위해서, 병중이나 노년에 돌봐줄 사람이 필요해서, 사랑하는 자녀들을 생각해서 등이다. 배우자가 무서워서, 또는 평판이 나빠지거나 좋지 않은 결과가 생길까봐, 또는 정욕 때문에 결혼애처럼 보이는 것을 유지하는 경우도 있다. 나아가서 배우자 간에 결혼애가 각기 다를 수도 있다. 한쪽은 결혼애가 다소간 있는데, 다른 쪽은 거의 없거나 아주 없을 수 있다. 그 차이로 인해 한쪽에게는 천국이고, 다른 쪽에게는 지옥일 수 있다. To some a likeness of marriage love is granted. Yet unless they are in the love of good and truth there is no marriage love, but only a love which from several causes appears like marriage love, namely, that they may secure good service at home; that they may be free from care, or at peace, or at ease; that they may be cared for in sickness or in old age; or that the children whom they love may be attended to. Some are constrained by fear of the other consort, or by fear of the loss of reputation, or other evil consequences, and some by a controlling lust. Moreover, in the two consorts marriage love may differ; in one there may be more or less of it, in the other little or none; and because of this difference heaven may be the portion of one and hell the portion of the other.
