천국의 부유한 사람과 가난한 사람

The Rich and the Poor in Heaven

가난한 사람은 그들이 가난해서가 아니라 생활에 따라서 천국에 간다. 모든 사람의 생활은 부자이건 가난하건 상관없이 그 사람을 따른다. 어느 한쪽을 선호하는 특별한 자비는 없다.주237 선하게 산 사람은 들어가고, 선하게 살지 않은 사람은 들어가지 못하는 것이다. The poor come into heaven not on account of their poverty but because of their life. Everyone’s life follows him, whether he be rich or poor. There is no peculiar mercy for one in preference to another;237 he that has lived well is received, while he that has not lived well is rejected.

 

나아가서는 가난도 재물과 전혀 다름없이 사람을 천국에서 멀어지게 만든다. 가난한 사람들 중에는 자기 형편에 불만하고, 많은 것을 가지려고 애쓰며, 재물이 축복이라고 믿는 사람들이 많다.주238 그들은 재물을 얻지 못하면 화를 내며, 신의 섭리에 대해 좋지 않은 생각을 품는다. 또한 그들은 좋은 것을 가진 사람을 질투하고, 기회만 오면 누구든 속일 태세이며, 불결한 쾌락에 몰두한다. 그러나 이와 다른 가난한 사람들도 있다. 자기 형편에 만족하고, 성심껏 부지런히 일하며, 태만함보다 일을 사랑하고, 정직하고 신용 있게 행하면서, 동시에 기독교적 생활을 하는 사람들이다. 나는 때로 이 세상에 살 때 하나님을 믿었고, 공정하고 바르게 자기 일을 행한 농부들이나 서민층 사람들과 대화를 해보았다. 그들은 진리에 대한 애정이 있었기 때문에, 이웃 사랑과 신앙에 대해 계속 질문했다. 그들이 이 세상에서는 신앙에 대해서, 저 세상에서는 이웃 사랑에 대해 많이 들어왔기 때문이었다. 그들은 다음과 같은 대답을 들었다. ‘이웃 사랑은 모두 생활에 속한 것이고, 신앙은 모두 교리에 관한 것이다. 따라서 이웃 사랑이란 모든 일에 있어서 공정하고 바른 것을 의도하고 행하는 것이며, 신앙은 공정하고 바르게 생각하는 것이다. 신앙과 이웃 사랑은 교리와 그에 따른 생활처럼, 또는 생각과 의지처럼 서로 결부되어 있다. 사람이 그가 생각하는 공정하고 올바른 것을 의도하고 행할 때, 신앙은 비로소 이웃 사랑이 된다. 이것이 이루어지면 신앙과 이웃 사랑은 둘이 아닌 하나가 된다.’ 그 사람들은 이것을 완전히 이해하고, 매우 기뻐했다. 믿는다는 것이 다른 게 아니라 생활임을 이 세상에 있을 때는 이해하지 못했었다고 그들은 말했다. Moreover, poverty leads and draws man away from heaven just as much as wealth does. There are many among the poor who are not content with their lot, who strive after many things, and believe riches to be blessings;238 and when they do not gain them are much provoked, and harbor ill thoughts about the Divine providence; they also envy others the good things they possess, and are as ready as anyone to defraud others whenever they have opportunity, and to indulge in filthy pleasures. But this is not true of the poor who are content with their lot, and are careful and diligent in their work, who love labor better than idleness, and act sincerely and faithfully, and at the same time live a Christian life. I have now and then talked with those belonging to the peasantry and common people, who while living in the world believed in God and did what was just and right in their occupations. Since they had an affection for knowing truth they inquired about charity and about faith, having heard in this world much about faith and in the other life much about charity. They were therefore told that charity is everything that pertains to life, and faith everything that pertains to doctrine; consequently charity is willing and doing what is just and right in every work, and faith is thinking justly and rightly; and faith and charity are conjoined, the same as doctrine and a life in accordance with it, or the same as thought and will; and faith becomes charity when that which a man thinks justly and rightly he also wills and does, and then they are not two but one. This they well understood, and rejoiced, saying that in the world they did not understand believing to be anything else but living.

 

 

주237. 시스템과 동떨어진 자비는 있을 수 없다. 오직 시스템을 통한 자비, 즉 주님의 계명을 따르며 산 사람들을 향한 자비만 있다. 주님은 그 자비로 그들을 세상에서 늘 인도하시다가 나중에는 영원으로 인도하신다 (AC.8700, 10659). There can be no mercy apart from means, but only mercy through means, that is, to those who live in accordance with the commandments of the Lord; such the Lord by His mercy leads continually in the world, and afterwards to eternity (n. 8700, 10659).

 

주238. 존엄과 부는 참된 복이 아니다. 그래서 이 둘은 악인과 선인 모두에게 허용되는 것이다 (AC.8939, 10775, 10776). Dignities and riches are not real blessings, therefore they are granted both to the wicked and to the good (n. 8939, 10775, 10776). 참된 복은 주님으로 말미암은 사랑과 신앙을 받아들이는 것이며, 그렇게 해서 조인하는 것이다. 이것이 영원한 행복의 근원이기 때문이다 (AC.1420, 1422, 2846, 3017, 3406, 3504, 3514, 3530, 3565, 3584, 4216, 4981, 8939, 10495). The real blessing is reception of love and faith from the Lord, and conjunction thereby, for this is the source of eternal happiness (n. 1420, 1422, 2846, 3017, 3406, 3504, 3514, 3530, 3565, 3584, 4216, 4981, 8939, 10495).
