천국의 부유한 사람과 가난한 사람

모든 사람의 주된 애정 또는 사랑은 사후에도 그대로 남아 있다. 이것은 사람에게 뿌리 박혀 영원히 없어지지 않는다. 사람의 영은 그의 사랑과 정확히 일치하기 때문이다. 또 지금까지 알려지지 않은 사실이지만, 모든 영과 천사의 몸은 그들의 사랑이 밖으로 드러난 모습이며, 그 천사나 영의 마음과 성격인 그들의 속 모습과 완벽하게 상응한다. 그렇기 때문에 영들의 얼굴, 태도, 말을 보면 그들의 본질을 알 수 있다. 따라서 이 세상에서도 얼굴과 태도와 말에 꾸밈이 없는 사람은 그것을 통해 그의 영혼의 본질을 알 수 있다. 이로써 사람의 주된 애정 또는 사랑이 그의 영원한 본질임이 분명해졌을 것이다. Every man’s ruling affection or love remains with him after death, nor is it rooted out to eternity, since a man’s spirit is wholly what his love is, and what is unknown, the body of every spirit and angel is the outward form of his love, exactly corresponding to his inward form, which is the form of his disposition and mind; consequently the quality of his spirit is known from his face, movements, and speech. While a man is living in the world the quality of the spirit would be known if he had not learned to counterfeit in his face, movements, and speech what is not his own. All this shows that man remains to eternity such as his ruling affection or love is.

 

나는 허락하심에 의해 1700년 전 사람들 몇과 얘기를 해보았다. 그들의 일생이 당대의 책을 통해 잘 알려져 있는 사람들이었는데, 그들이 세상에 있을 때 가졌던 중심적 사랑이 여전히 그들을 지배하고 있는 것을 보았다. 그것을 보면 모든 사람의 재물에 대한 사랑과 재물의 쓰임새에 대한 사랑도 영원히 남는다는 것과, 또 그 사랑은 이 세상에서 획득한 사랑과 완전히 똑같다는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 다른 점은, 그들의 재물을 선하게 사용한 사람들에게 있어서는, 그 재물이 내세에 가면 그것이 쓰인 용도에 맞는 기쁨으로 바뀐다는 것이고, 그 재물을 악하게 쓴 사람들에게 있어서는, 그 재물이 한낱 오물로 변한다는 사실이다. 그들은 그 오물에서 이 세상에 있을 때 악하게 사용한 재산이 주던 즐거움과 똑같은 즐거움을 느낀다. It has been granted me to talk with some who lived seventeen hundred years ago, and whose lives are well known from writings of that time, and it was found that the same love still rules them as when they were on the earth. This makes clear also that the love of riches, and of uses from riches, remains with everyone to eternity, and that it is exactly the same as the love acquired in the world, yet with the difference that in the case of those who devoted their riches to good uses riches are changed in the other world into delights which are in accord with the uses performed; while in the case of those who devoted their riches to evil uses riches are turned into mere filth, in which they then take the same delight as they did in the world in their riches devoted to evil uses.

 

이들이 오물에서 즐거움을 얻는 이유는, 그들이 재물을 사용한 용도였던 불결한 쾌락들과 부도덕한 행동들이, 그리고 또한 쓰임새를 중시하지 않고, 재물을 사랑하는 것인 탐욕이, 오물에 상응하기 때문이다. 영적 오물은 다른 것이 아니다. Such then take delight in filth because filthy pleasures and shameful acts, which had been the uses to which they had devoted their riches, and also avarice, which is a love of riches without regard to use, correspond to filth. Spiritual filth is nothing else.
