천국의 부유한 사람과 가난한 사람

천국의 부자들은 남들보다 더 화려한 생활을 한다. 그들 중 일부는 모든 것이 금, 은으로 된 듯 광채 나는 궁전에 산다. 그들은 생활에 필요한 모든 것이 풍족하지만, 조금도 거기 마음을 두지 않고, 오직 그 쓰임새만 생각한다. 그들에게 쓰임새는 빛을 받은 듯 분명하게 보이지만, 금, 은은 거기 비하면 그늘에 있는 듯 흐릿하게 보인다. 그 이유는 이들이 세상에 살 때, 쓰임새를 사랑했고, 금, 은은 단지 수단과 도구로만 사랑했기 때문이다. 천국에서 광채를 내는 것은 쓰임새다. 쓰임새에 속한 선은 금처럼, 쓰임새에 속한 진리는 은처럼 광채가 난다.주236 따라서 천국에서 그들의 부와 기쁨과 행복은 세상에서의 그들의 쓰임새와 일치한다. 선한 쓰임새란, 자신과 가족의 생활에 필요한 것을 공급하는 것, 그리고 나라와 이웃을 위해서 부를 추구하는 것을 말한다. 그런 면에서는 부자가 가난한 사람보다 훨씬 크게 이바지하는 것이다. 이러한 것이 선한 쓰임새인 이유는 그것을 통해 사람이 나태한 생활에 빠지지 않게 되기 때문이다. 나태한 생활은 사람의 생각을 그 타고난 악으로 흐르게 하기 때문에 해롭다. 쓰임새는 그 안에 신성을 담고 있는 만큼, 다시 말하면 사람이 신과 천국을 바라보고, 이 쓰임새에서 유익을 찾으며, 재물은 오직 부수적 유익으로 여기는 정도만큼 선하다. As to the lot of the rich in heaven, they live more splendidly than others. Some of them dwell in palaces within which everything is resplendent as if with gold and silver. They have an abundance of all things for the uses of life, but they do not in the least set their heart on these things, but only on uses. Uses are clearly seen as if they were in light, but the gold and silver are seen obscurely, and comparatively as if in shade. This is because while they were in the world they loved uses, and loved gold and silver only as means and instruments. It is the uses that are thus resplendent in heaven, the good of use like gold and the truth of use like silver.236 Therefore their wealth in heaven is such as their uses were in the world, and such, too, are their delight and happiness. Good uses are providing oneself and one’s own with the necessaries of life; also desiring wealth for the sake of one’s country and for the sake of one’s neighbor, whom a rich man can in many ways benefit more than a poor man. These are good uses because one is able thereby to withdraw his mind from an indolent life which is harmful, since in such a life man’s thoughts run to evil because of the evil inherent in him. These uses are good to the extent that they have the Divine in them, that is, to the extent that man looks to the Divine and to heaven, and finds his good in these, and sees in wealth only a subservient good.

Angelic life consists in the goods of love and charity, thus in performing uses (n. 454). 사람이 마음에 품고 있는 목적들은, 그게 곧 쓰임새들인데, 주님과, 그래서 천사들이 관심있어하는 유일한 것들이다 (AC.1317, 1645, 5844). The ends that man has in view, which are uses, are the only things that the Lord, and thus the angels, consider (n. 1317, 1645, 5844). 주님의 나라는 쓰임새들의 나라다(AC.454, 696, 1103, 3645, 4054, 7038). The kingdom of the Lord is a kingdom of uses (n. 454, 696, 1103, 3645, 4054, 7038). 쓰임새를 수행하는 것이 곧 주님을 섬기는 것이다(AC.7038).
