천국의 지혜로운 사람과 단순한 사람

진리와 선 자체를 목적으로 진리와 선을 사랑한 사람은 모두 천국에 간다. 따라서 많이 사랑한 사람은 지혜롭다고 하고, 조금 사랑한 사람은 단순하다고 한다. 천국의 지혜로운 사람은 더 많은 빛 안에, 단순한 사람은 더 적은 빛 안에, 모두 자기가 선과 진리를 사랑하는 정도에 따라 빛 안에 있다. 진리와 선 자체를 목적으로 진리와 선을 사랑한다는 것은 진리와 선을 의도하고 실천한다는 뜻이다. 뜻하고 행하는 사람은 그것을 사랑하는 것이고, 반면 뜻하지도 행하지도 않는 사람은 그것을 사랑하는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 진리와 선을 의도하고 실천하는 사람은 주님을 사랑하고, 주께 사랑을 받는다. 진리와 선은 주님으로부터 오는 것이기 때문이다. 그리고 선과 진리가 주님으로부터 오는 것인 만큼 주님은 그 선과 진리 안에 계시며, 또한 선과 진리를 의도하고 실천함으로써 자기 삶 속에 받아들이는 사람 안에 계신다. 나아가서 사람은 그 자체로 보면, 그의 선과 진리 외에 아무 것도 아니다. 선은 그의 의지에, 진리는 그의 사고력에 속하며, 사람이 어떠한가는 그의 의지와 사고가 어떠한가와 같기 때문이다. 그러므로 사람의 의지가 선으로 형성되고, 그의 사고력이 진리로 구성되는 정도만큼 그는 주께 사랑받는다는 것이 확실해진다. 또한 주께 사랑받는 것은 주를 사랑하는 것이다. 사랑이란 상호적인 것이기 때문이다. 주의 사랑을 받는 사람에게 사랑하는 능력을 주시는 것이다. All are received into heaven who have loved truth and good for the sake of truth and good; therefore those that have loved much are called the wise, and those that have loved little are called the simple. The wise in heaven are in much light, the simple in less light, everyone in accordance with the degree of his love for good and truth. To love truth and good for the sake of truth and good is to will and do them; for those love who will and do, while those who do not will and do, do not love. Such also love the Lord and are loved by the Lord, because good and truth are from the Lord. And inasmuch as good and truth are from the Lord the Lord is in good and truth; and he is in those who receive good and truth in their life by willing and doing. Moreover, when man is viewed in himself he is nothing but his own good and truth, because good is of his will and truth of his understanding, and man is such as his will and understanding are. Evidently, then, man is loved by the Lord just to the extent that his will is formed from good and his understanding from truth. Also to be loved by the Lord is to love the Lord, since love is reciprocal; for upon him who is loved the Lord bestows ability to love.
