천국의 지혜로운 사람과 단순한 사람

The Wise and the Simple in Heaven

피상적 지성과 지혜란, 무엇이 진리이고 선인가를, 그리고 그것을 토대로 무엇이 허위이고 악인가를 내면으로부터 보고 직관하지 못하고, 단지 남들이 그렇다고 했기 때문에, 그것이 진리와 선, 또는 허위와 악이라고 믿고 확신하는 것을 말한다. 이들은 진리 자체에 의해서가 아니라 다른 사람에 의해서 진리를 보기 때문에, 허위를 진리처럼 붙들고 믿으며, 심지어 그것이 진리로 보일 정도로 확신할 수 있다. 사람이 확신한 것은 무엇이든 진리같이 보이며, 확신하지 못할 것은 없기 때문이다. 이런 사람들의 내면은 아래로부터만 열려 있고, 그들의 외면은 스스로 확신한 정도에 따라 열려 있다. 그렇기 때문에 그들의 시각을 비추는 빛은 천국의 빛이 아니라 자연적 빛, 즉 이 세상 빛이다. 그 빛에는 허위가 진리처럼 반짝일 수 있고, 확신한 허위는 눈부시게 빛나기조차 한다. 그러나 천국 빛으로는 그렇게 되지 않는다. 이런 사람들 중에서 자기 생각을 더 굳게 확신한 사람들은 지성과 지혜가 덜하고, 확신의 정도가 약할수록 더 지성적이고, 지혜롭다. 이상의 내용은 피상적 지성과 지혜가 무엇인지를 보여 준다. Spurious intelligence and wisdom is failing to see and perceive from within what is true and what is good, and thereby what is false and what is evil, but merely believing that to be true and good and that to be false and evil which is said by others to be so, and then confirming it. Because such see truth from someone else, and not from the truth itself, they can seize upon and believe what is false as readily as what is true, and can confirm it until it appears true; for whatever is confirmed puts on the appearance of truth; and there is nothing that cannot be confirmed. The interiors of such are opened only from beneath; but their exteriors are opened to the extent that they have confirmed themselves. For this reason the light from which they see is not the light of heaven but the light of the world, which is called natural light [lumen]; and in that light falsities can shine like truths; and when confirmed they can even appear resplendent, but not in the light of heaven. Of this class those are less intelligent and wise who have strongly confirmed themselves, and those are more intelligent and wise who have less strongly confirmed themselves. All this shows what spurious intelligence and wisdom are.

 

[2] 그러나 어린 시절에 스승으로부터 들은 것을 진리라고 여겼다가 성인이 된 후 스스로 생각하게 되었을 때, 더 이상 그것을 고수하지 않고 진리를 갈망하며 그 갈망에서 진리를 추구하고, 진리를 찾았을 때 내적으로 감동하는 사람들은 이 부류에 들어가지 않는다. 그런 사람들은 진리를 목적으로 진리에 감동하기 때문에, 무엇이 진리인가를 보고 난 후에 확신한다.주228 But those are not included in this class who in childhood supposed what they heard from their masters to be true, if in a riper age, when they think from their own understanding, they do not continue to hold fast to it, but long for truth, and from that longing seek for it, and when they find it are interiorly moved by it. Because such are moved by the truth for the truth’s sake they see the truth before they confirm it.228

 

[3] 예를 들어 설명해 보자. 동물들에게는 날 때부터 그들의 본성에 맞는 모든 지식이 있는데, 사람은 왜 그렇지 못한가에 대해 어떤 영들이 토론을 한 적이 있다. 그들이 얻은 해답은 이러했다. 동물들은 그들 생명의 법칙을 타고 나지만, 사람은 그렇지 않다. 따라서 사람은 내적 외적 사실들을 배움으로써 그 법칙으로 인도되어야만 한다. 생명의 법칙이란 바로 하나님을 가장 사랑하고, 이웃을 자기 몸같이 사랑하는 것이다. 만일 사람이 그 생명의 법칙을 타고 난다면, 그는 지성과 지혜를 지닌 상태로 태어날 것이고, 지식이 더해감에 따라 모든 진리를 믿는 데 이를 것이다. 선한 영들은 단번에 이것을 보고 그것이 진리임을 지각했다. 그들은 이것을 오직 진리의 빛으로 보고 지각했다. 반면에 믿음으로만 구원받는다는 고정관념을 스스로 굳히고, 그에 따라 사랑과 이타심을 도외시한 영들은 그것을 이해하지 못했다. 그들이 이미 굳혀버린 허위의 빛 때문에 그들에게는 진리의 빛이 흐려져 있었기 때문이다. This may be illustrated by an example. There was a discussion among spirits why animals are born into all the knowledge suited to their nature, but man is not; and the reason was said to be that animals are in the order of their life, and man is not, consequently man must needs be led into order by means of what he learns of internal and external things. But if man were born into the order of his life, which is to love God above all things and his neighbor as himself, he would be born into intelligence and wisdom, and as knowledges are acquired would come into a belief in all truth. Good spirits saw this at once and perceived it to be true, and this merely from the light of truth; while the spirits who had confirmed themselves in faith alone, and had thereby set aside love and charity, were unable to understand it, because the light of falsity which they had confirmed had made obscure to them the light of truth.

It is the part of the wise to see and perceive whether a thing is true before it is confirmed and not merely to confirm what is said by others (n. 1017, 4741, 7012, 7680, 7950). 진리를 위해, 그리고 삶을 위해 진리에 감동하는 사람들만이 어떤 것을 진리라 하기 전에 먼저 보고 지각할 수 있다(AC.8521). Only those can see and perceive whether a thing is true before it is confirmed who are affected by truth for the sake of truth and for the sake of life (n. 8521). 컨펌의 빛은 영적 빛이 아닌, 자연적 빛이며, 심지어 악인들도 가질 수 있는 감각의 빛이기조차 하다(AC.8780). The light of confirmation is not spiritual light but natural light, and is even sensual light which the wicked may have (n. 8780). 모든 것, 심지어 허위조차도 마치 진리인 듯 보여 컨펌될 수 있다 (AC.2477, 2480, 5033, 6865, 8521). All things, even falsities, may be so confirmed as to appear like truths (n. 2477, 2480, 5033, 6865, 8521).
